How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
Ha, the band came together in typical late 80s – early 90s punk rock fashion, we were all from small towns, desperate to connect, and be part of the global music revolution which was happening; Indie Rock. These days we’re pretty democratic, yes, pretty much anything goes. If someone feels strongly about one thing or another we usually let ‘em get their say.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Our sound is super rudimentary boy-girl indie pop. Above all it’s the sound of two clutzy not-really-musicians playing and singing alongside two really-pretty-good players. We all add to each others’ strengths and it ends up reasonably listenable.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Oh god, so many, it’s impossible to say. One day it’s Spiritualized, the next day it’s vintage Dickies, the next day it’s Jets to Brazil. Anything goes. Except Byron Bay acoustic beach rock. That shit don’t go.
Your new single ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Directly quoting Kellie here (it’s her song)
This song arrived out of nowhere one day when i was setting up and figuring out how to get guitar into garage band. I plugged in, set a drum beat and started playing rhythm guitar. I liked how it sounded. I did another guitar with a rhythm that ran over it and went against it. I thought hmmm this is cool.
I sent it to my friend Stevie and he put some proper drums on it and it really started to sound very very cool. It was just gonna be some fun but then it started to take shape.
The lyrics are random reflections on the last few years, an over use of social media, feeling we all need to look away from our devices and the reflections we see of ourselves aren’t real anymore.
Trump looking into the sun during the eclipse, and other words and ideas that were swirling around in my head at that time, it’s all a bit of stream of consciousness that I had to pick bits and pieces of to make sense. And it doesn’t make sense. It’s not meant to.
Your new album is due out May 6, what can fans expect from the release?
It’s a very mixed bag, slow / fast, stupid / serious – like a lot of our albums. Also it’s a good balance of rough and smooth, production-wise, it represents us well. We didn’t sweat the songs too hard once we were in the studio, they sound natural and not over-thought. There are mistakes and weird notes left in.
Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Well we have a new drummer on board at the moment, a dude called Phil. He’s very nice. He’ll probably come out and say hi to everyone after the gig. He has very big sideburns and doesn’t mind a lager.
Other than that we’ll try and play a nice long set, something old, something new, something borrowed, and possibly something blue.

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
We’ve all had to introduce Acceptance. Which is kinda ok. It’s not the end of the world. It makes you realise we’re all in it together and our lives really aren’t that bad, if our biggest problem is not being able to go on tour and play loud music and drink beer.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I’m gonna go all out here. JESUS. I’m not religious at all, but fuck, imagine setting up and doing a 30 minute set at the last supper?! That’d be insane.
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
Not die on stage. Not even fall off the stage (again) Not die too young, keep making music, keep being fit enough to go on tour. To find some new tricks and not keep writing the same song forever.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
It’s so easy to forget people are there to let loose, get drunk, have a good time, feel young, and stop worrying for 90 mins. It’s too easy to get all self critical. The biggest thing is to be able to just let the fun happen and enjoy it with them.. That’s the best thing.
What’s been the career highlight so far?
Starting a band in 1987, and still people are interested enough to ask me questions in 2022. That’s fucking crazy, and amazing!
