Sudan Archivesnew song and video Selfish Soul is an ode to Black hair. The LA-based artist says the song is “about women and the celebration of hair. It’s about representation of different hair textures and embracing all colours and textures of it.”

She adds, “I feel like there’s an American standard of what beautiful hair is, and I wanted to show in this video that’s not what all beauty is; to showcase different hairstyles and different types of women and their hair. I was inspired by India Arie’s I Am Not My Hair, one of the first songs I heard about this subject. She talks about extensions and weaves and natural hair and nappy hair, and that she’s not her hair; she won’t conform to the comparisons that would come up if you had a weave or sew-in or natural hair or Afro – that doesn’t represent her.” In the vibrant video directed by Trey Lyons, Sudan plays her violin upside down on a pole and standing on a roof. She and her girlfriends dance in the mud, celebrating the beauty of hair in all different colours and textures.

Sudan recently released Home Maker, her first original song since her 2019 album Athena. Home Maker was added to BBC 6 Music’s A-list and named Best New Track by Pitchfork, who called it “A swaggering statement of intent with all the idiosyncratic charm that makes her music so memorable.” Home Maker received rapturous praise from The Guardian, the FADER, Stereogum, Clash, The Line of Best Fit, The Fader, FLOOD, and many more.

This June, Sudan will appear on Neneh Cherry’s The Versions, a new album featuring reworked versions of the iconic artist’s songs by musicians including Sia, Robyn, Charli XCX, ANOHNI, Jamila Woods, and more. She also recently covered Dogtown for Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono alongside contributors including David Byrne, Japanese Breakfast and Sharon van Etten.

At the end of 2021, Sudan Archives joined Tame Impala for a run of arena shows. She will perform at several festivals this spring and summer in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe, with more dates to come. Additionally, Sudan just announced two UK headline dates in Leeds on August 23 & Brighton on August 30 to round out her Summer 2022 EU/UK run. Tickets on sale this Friday 20 May.

Selfish Soul was written by Sudan Archives, Dexter Story and Ben Dickey, and produced by Sudan Archives and Ben Dickey.
