Perth’s powerhouse community collective Alter Boy have unveiled their latest single ‘I Repent’, an ode to self-forgiveness and transformation. It’s a powerful reminder that you are not bad, you are not broken, you can get better, and you can have a life. Whatever you did in the dark, let the light in.

Alter Boy’s frontperson, Molly Priest reflects on the track, “It’s a reminder that each of us is worthy of admission, and that it’s okay to release ourselves from past mistakes. I describe my younger self as ‘the old man in the rocking chair who sits on the porch with the shotgun’. I thought everybody was out to hurt me, I was dysregulated and avoidant, and I really didn’t know what was happening to me. And I’ve had to forgive myself for some of my behaviour at that time.

One of my favourite quotes is by Richard Kadrey. He says, “when you’re born in a burning house you think the whole world is on fire.” Many of us have to learn that it’s not, and then we need to forgive ourselves for acting like it was.

I’m fortunate to be able to use my life as an example and to use my experiences to help other young people to understand what’s happening to them, and to put in the work toward being a healthier person. My work also gives me the insight to know that a lot of people share this experience. If we repent, then we admit that we’ve done something destructive or that we’ve made mistakes and that’s a difficult thing to concede in a society that likes to categorise people as either good or bad.”

Since opening the West Australian Music Awards in 2020, Alter Boy have been on an incredible journey, re-defining what live performance looks like, creating spaces of inclusivity and allowing worlds that may not normally co-exist to become intertwined through their music and captivating performances.

Alter Boy combines heartbeat-like rhythms both pounding and pulsating with visual storytelling and bespoke lighting in an otherworldly way that is very much of this world. Priest bears herself, literally. Her uniquely tattooed chest reclaims the cross as she wears, lives, and breathes her art both physically and in song.

They will be performing at this year’s Vivid Festival as part of the Carriageworks programming on June 2. Alter Boy have also just been announced on the WA Day Festival on June 6, alongside Australian rock royalty including Birds of Tokyo, Eskimo Joe and Jebediah. If you have never been to an Alter Boy show before, now is your opportunity to see what you’ve been missing out on.

The senses themselves are enlightened, not only by the unexpected feast of sound and vision, but towards the d/Deaf experience as it is presented to us to embrace and (potentially learn to better) understand. Priest leads with vocals that ululate her intersecting identities, backed with Auslan signing that adds not only an evocative physicality to the music but opens a world of inclusiveness to an audience who are not able to access a traditional gig.

Alter Boy have enthralled audiences at WAMFest, Wave Rock Weekender, Perth International Arts Festival, Nannup Festival, Fairbridge, State Of The Art and were set to perform at this year’s Yours & Owls Festival which was unfortunately cancelled. They were nominated for Best Pop Band at the 2020 WAM Awards, crowned  feature artist on triple j Unearthed and praised for their Like A Version performance with their take on Lil Nas X’s MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) – watch here

With several singles and an acclaimed EP, Act Of God under their belt, they plan to expand on their dream pop sound, as well as collaborating with Auslan deaf and hard-of-hearing artists on a national basis.
