Fresh from her biggest headline tour to date, as well as a regional run with Groovin The Moo, today, Hope D announces the release of her highly anticipated debut album Clash Of The Substance available October 21 via AWAL. The Brisbane based singer-songwriter also shares the striking new single and video Emerald.
With her signature vocal delivery slicked over upbeat guitars and drums, Hope has penned another instant earworm. “I wrote Emerald when I started dating people during my first year out of school, and noticed that everyone was way cooler than what I thought I was. My interests naturally changed as I was freshly 18 and new to the Brisbane nightlife and music scene, but I also forcefully changed to try and impress my love interest at the time. Trying to impress someone is a funny situation in general, turning into a different person made me realise there is no point if we are all trying to be each other. Plus, you end up losing yourself and are left with no genuine personality.” She explains.
The accompanying music video directed by Maeve McKenna brings a bright and colourful exploration of the song to life in the setting of an arcade. “The music video came about when Maeve saw me play at The Brightside earlier this year for a flood relief gig and reached out. I got my really good friends Mads and Henry (from The Dandy’s), Aisling (from Dizzy Days) and Jade (Marketing manager for the Triffid, and Fortitude Music Hall) to play my friends, which made it so natural and fun. Amelia Douglass was flown from Sydney to play my love interest. It was awkward and scary at first, but by the end of it we realised that we got along so well and we’ll be working together again. I am so grateful for the way this all happened and all the beautiful extras that came and acted, as well as the beautiful boy at the beginning (it was hard to act mean to him).”
Hope D won’t be held responsible for decisions made under the influence of hormones, heartbreak, alcohol and the other intoxicants which go to war in the arena of her debut LP, Clash Of The Substance. Armed with a painful honesty, her guitar and a dangerously low balance on her debit card, the queer coming-of-age soundtrack cements her as one of Australia’s most refreshing new voices. Introducing herself in late 2019 with her debut single Swim, Hope D captivated audiences with her eclectic capability to create purposeful, confessional and captivating music. This release led her to taking home the inaugural Queensland Music Awards Emerging Artist Of The Year, performances at BIGSOUND 2019, Splendour In The Grass, Laneway Festival and King Street Crawl, as well as sold-out headline shows in her hometown Brisbane.
The beginning of 2020 saw her release an aptly titled second single named Second and then follow up tracks Common Denominator and Miscommunicate, once again wowing and surprising fans by her change in sound, but maintaining the same inviting charm and razor-sharp wit through her authentically honest, raw and relatable songs. Hope ended 2020 by winning the prestigious Carol Lloyd Award, an initiative aimed to address the gender imbalance in music and support an emerging female-identifying or non-binary singer-songwriter.
Hope’s single Second landed #69 in triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2020. Off the back of her debut EP Cash Only Hope took off on a sold out national tour playing 19 shows in 3 weeks of March 2021. The single Addict received a full addition to triple j and landed the #195spot in triple j’s Hottest 200 for 2021. Hope was widely praised for her cover of Britney Spears’ Toxic she performed for Like A Version, last year. She played to almost sold out crowds during her Happy Hangover tour dates in her home state of QLD late last year, with the single added to full rotation on triple j and widely praised by the likes of NME, Tone Deaf, Music Feeds, Purple Sneakers and Pilerats. Earlier this year she released Hate Goodbyes and went on her first national headline tour alongside regional dates with Groovin The Moo.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
