Praise for ROYEL OTIS

“The chemistry they’ve got within the music is undeniable… Honestly, I think you’re gonna fall for it hook line and sinker, I did at the very first listen.” – Jack Saunders, BBC Radio 1’s Indie Show

“[Without U] might be the strongest Breaking track I’ve played in quite some time.” – Matt Wilkinson, Apple Music’s Beats 1

“Campus has arrived and is the perfect summer soundtrack to a post lockdown world: sweet, nostalgic lyrics dance playfully over infectious drums and great guitar riffs.” – 10 Magazine

“…they’ve crafted an indie-leaning palette and youthful exuberance that is fit for your favourite coming-of-age dramas.” – The Line of Best Fit

“Royel Otis’ debut EP Bar N Grill is a collection of sweet, melodic pop that harkens back to the halcyon era of 2000s and 2010s indie. Built around skeletal arrangements and easy melodies, this is unassuming, smartly crafted pop.” – The FADER

Today, 2022’s crown jewel duo of Sydney’s indie scene, Royel Otis share their newest single and video, “Kool Aid” out now via OURNESS.

After releasing their sophomore EP, Bar N Grill earlier this year, one of the country’s brightest acts to surf the indie-set, Royel Otis return in fine form with “Kool Aid”. A glistening slice of alt-pop provides three minutes of summery perfection. Produced by Chris Collins, “Kool Aid” sees Otis’ vocals glide atop echoing guitar tones and a driving back-beat, crooning to the yearn of love’s hopeful flavour of the week. Suited to a soiree in the haze of a sunny afternoon, fall into the melodic DIY throes of “Kool Aid”with blissful ease.

Royel Otis say of the single: “If Bruce Lee and Springsteen had a baby, ‘Kool Aid’ would be it. Called Bruce. Bruce Lee slicing the guitar Jeet Kune Do-style and a heartland rock type feel like from the boss himself. ‘Kool Aid’ is a slice of the moment after years of being smitten by the coolest girl on the street. She’s a little older and has all the rumours about her but for some reason she is entertained by you and wants to teach you new tricks.”

The track also comes accompanied with a stunning music video directed by Kyle Caulfield and produced by Ady Neshoda, which sees Royel Otis situated in a retro furniture store. The surreal clip introduces us to duo’s elderly counterparts, who embark on a mission to plunge themselves into baths of Kool Aid and harness the drink’s youthful powers – watch HERE.

Released earlier this year, Royel Otis’ sophomore EP Bar N Grill marked lyrical explorations of life and love across six acclaimed tracks. Musing on life’s highs, lows and anything-but minuscule moments in between via witty observations and experiences, the EP spawned globally acclaimed singles including the triple j Most Played favourite, “Bull Breed”, and lead single, “Oysters In My Pocket”, which has amassed over 5 million online streams worldwide and continues to climb by the masses. Since gracing the covers of global playlists including Spotify’s Front Left, Indie Arrivals and Supersound, Apple Music’s Heaps Indie and more, the band have garnered widespread playlisting support across Australian community radio, as well as community and college radio in the US. In the UK, the band have captured the attention of international tastemakers such as BBC Radio 6, Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 and Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1.

In 2021 the band released their debut EP Campus, which introduced Royel Otis as an Australian act to watch in its rising indie scene. Following a stint in New York, Royel met Otis after a hazy night out in a Sydney Bar. Otis, fresh out of high school, mustered up the courage to share some of the demos he had been working on in isolation, and an instantaneous creative click soon happened. Fusing Otis’ DIY productions with his own wonky samples he’d gathered during his time in the Big Apple, the two churned out tunes in Royel’s Sydney sunroom, slowly shaping their sound.

From their home studio beginnings honing and tinkering at a sound now so distinctively their own, Royel Otis has evolved to embrace a rapturous live show. After two initial sold-out headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne, the band completed a string of performances supporting The Rubens, Teenage Dads and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, taking them right across the country and to regional cities. Now, the band have embarked on their debut headline European and UK tour throughout October, performing to their growing overseas fanbases for the very first time.

Today, envelope yourself within fine serenity and wonder, as Royel Otis deliver another cleverly constructed piece of DIY-pop, “Kool Aid”.
