Pull out your hard drive and plug in Nan’s USB, the debut EP from Caroline & Claude lands today via The Orchard.  Twisting freewheeling anarchy and lucid, youthful truth-telling into gleaming barbed wires, it’s a pop record that’s sensitive, smart, and brilliantly deranged.  To mark the release, the acerbic siblings release their new single iOS, alongside the track’s official video.

iOS is a surreal soundscape that splits the difference between expansive psych-pop and the intimacy of Billie Eilish.  “We wrote iOS while I was in year 12,” says Claude of the new single.  “It’s about a childhood friend who I  grew apart from. I was okay, however, because it happened so naturally. If you listen closely, you can hear texting sounds; alluding to the fact that the song is about the final words sent to that friend through text, and the miscommunication that may follow. Mixed by Oscar Dawson, the production is simple, but slowly builds. It’s chaotically beautiful, just like the end of the friendship,” he adds.

The latest instalment in their self-directed video series, the triple-threats have this to say of the iOS official video, “We wanted the iOS film clip to show the digital world blending with reality; as the song is about the loss of a friendship by cause of natural circumstances and miscommunication through texting… hence why we are always on our phones in the video!”

The strength of Nan’s USB capitalises on the breathless praise that’s already been heaped upon Caroline & Claude by everyone from Rolling Stone (“A harmony that’s unique and entirely theirs”) to Brooklyn Vegan (“very catchy and charming”) and triple j (“Dreamy and gorgeously toned”) and satiates a fanbase that’s been growing with each new BBC Radio 1 play and triple j rotation add. The adoration Caroline & Claude have received already, at this nascent stage in their career, is the result of the unique magic they conjure together: introvert wit and extrovert emotionality intertwining to create witty, bombastic tales for a new generation of pop fans.

In mid-2020, forced into pandemic-induced isolation together, Caroline & Claude started to make music, and soon realised they’d stumbled upon something special. Their first song they made was the whimsical, cinematic Fuck You – this isn’t a duo who mince words – a track that, since its release in early-November, has already become a calling card for the duo. The opener to Nan’s USB, Fuck You sets the tone for a debut EP that’s prickly and never-too-reverent, even at its most openhearted. I’m Where I’m Supposed To Be, a highlight, plays like classic doo-wop by way of Tyler, the Creator. Elsewhere, they nod to Dick Dale and classic Western scores, pen a moonlit ballad destined for prom scenes in teen movies, and reorient cloud rap for an anxious generation.

Alongside iOS and Fuck You, Nan’s USB features six brand new tracks from the Adelaide bred and Sydney based duo.  “Nan’s USB is such an exciting release for us because it shows our listeners we make music that we want to make… our sound doesn’t just fit into just one genre; we don’t do labels babes,” says Caroline of the EP.

The title?  After writing each song, Caroline & Claude would load them onto a USB for their Nan to listen to.  “This EP is quite literally a digital version of the USB stick in her car!. She couldn’t figure out streaming, so USB’s just worked way easier!” laughs Caroline.

The new single and EP announcement follows on from a string of groundbreaking singles including Dreams, IDK YOU, it’s not that bad, and their acid-tongued debut Stir The PotSince their inception, Caroline & Claude have caught the attention of discerning fans and tastemakers at home as well as in the US and UK, smearing more chaos across the decidedly staid pop landscape with each successive single, BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo and Jack Saunders, triple j and NME. The pair performed to rapturous audiences at BIGSOUND, as special guest for Nyxen, alongside headline performances in Melbourne and Sydney.

“We hope everyone loves Nan’s USB; I heard a rumour listening to it makes you hotter than u already are xx,” Caroline concludes.

About CAROLINE & CLAUDE

Caroline & Claude – were, in a sense, born into music. Performance was part of their lives from a young age, whether in the form of the jam sessions they’d have with their extended family, or putting on shows for their parents, Wayne and Jules. But their musical lineage goes even further than that: Caroline & Claude’s grandparents are singers, and used to sing in jazz cafes in their native India. In other words, the fruit that comes to bear in Caroline and Claude’s music grows from a perfect push-pull between nature and nurture: the result of innate musical genes given space to grow and create with impunity.

In mid-2020, forced into pandemic-induced isolation together, Caroline & Claude started to make music, and soon realised they’d stumbled upon something special. To properly understand their music, it’s important to rid your mind of comparisons with other sibling duos. In truth, Caroline & Claude are diametric opposites, the former a classic extrovert and the latter a total introvert. Where Caroline spends her days chasing the kind of emotional connection and social interaction that fuels her art – which, aside from songwriting, also encompasses poetry – Claude is a quintessential studio rat, content to spend his time finessing and perfecting his production techniques. The result is a harmony that’s unique and entirely theirs, and not unlike the one conjured when they sing together. It’s Caroline & Claude’s own kind of magic: introvert wit and extrovert emotionality intertwining to create witty, bombastic tales for a new generation of pop fans.
