Last Friday 24th February, 21-year-old New-Zealand artist Muroki shared his balmy new single, Sweet Lime, out everywhere now on Olive Records via Universal New Zealand. Sweet Lime was produced by Justyn Pilbrow, most well-known for The Neighbourhood Sweater Weather, and written by Muroki on trips to New York City and Berlin last year.

Speaking on the meaning behind the track, Muroki explains; “Sweet Lime was birthed when I was half dead on the couch in Justyn’s studio in Brooklyn, New York. The song is about navigating the bitter sweet ’n’ sour nature of a long distant relationship. After New York, I was kicking around with my girl in Berlin for three weeks, where the song pretty much finished itself off.”

Sweet Lime follows the release of Muroki’s sophomore EP Heading East in September 2022. The six track collection included the singles Simple Pleasures, Find Me and Introducing, a melting pot of Muroki’s musical influences with its nods to indie, pop, reggae and world music.

Muroki’s smooth, roots based sound mixes his Raglan background of skating pavements and surfing breaks with inspiration from local music, his Kenyan background and sounds from the streets of North and South America.

His breakout hit Wavy topped the NZ charts and the breezy soul-pop jam Surfin’ became a triple j playlist fave and was nominated by GQ as the single “..soundtrack of Summer.”

Muroki’s vocals catch your undivided attention, his voice a hypnotic instrument effortlessly caressing melodies to melt even the toughest of us. Release after release, Muroki continues to show us that he is someone you don’t want to be late on, and he is just getting started.
