Naarm/Melbourne based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Monnie (Thelma Plum; Sweater Curse) today releases her debut solo single ‘Tell Me Something’, co-written with rising artist Forest Claudette.

Starting out in classical music in Brisbane/Meeanjin, Monnie was the only kid at school obsessed enough with learning the recorder that she took it all the way – progressing to clarinet and studying classical music theory throughout school. She soon broke free from the rigidity of classical music within the city’s flourishing indie music scene in several successful projects, before moving to Naarm/Melbourne.

Moonie’s music matches her personality: energetic, warm and inviting, sparked by vibrant confidence, but also unafraid to reveal candid vulnerability in between the buoyant production. She makes music to make people feel good, but moreover, Monnie makes music for people to find their tribe, their community in.

“‘Tell Me Something’ is a song I wrote with my friend Kobe (Forest Claudette) during the last Naarm lockdown of 2021” says Monnie. “It is a dramatic version of how I was feeling about dating – frustrated, unmatched, lost. I feel like I am being constantly misrepresented or underestimated, especially by men. Ego and posturing is boring to me, it’s annoying!!!

“People have often told me that I’m intimidating when all I’ve been looking for is human connection. This song is about how the more you try to impress someone/project your own shit onto them, the less you actually get out of an interaction. Writing this song let me be silly, petty, and get out some of that frustration without hurting anybody.”
