Up-and-coming singer-songwriter/musician, Madelaine De Leon, is finally after a massive wait releasing her first-ever single, ‘Autumn, Still’ which will be available on all streaming platforms on April 15, 2023.

‘Autumn, Still’ is an indie folk, neo-soul, and jazz bop paying homage to the likes of Corinne Bailey Rae, Lizzy Mcalpine, and Norah Jones. The song is produced by Kenner Yoga (Kyoga) and mixed/mastered by Western Sydney musical maven, Déjà Miru. Weaving together ukulele strums, a tinkle of a piano, and accompanied by natural sound samples, this is the perfect tune to have a cuppa tea with this season.

This track is about the idea of trying to turn over a new leaf but finding it hard to change. Centred around the lyric, “tried to turn them over, but they’re all brown, plucked out and dried all up,”. It’s about letting opportunities pass you by, putting you into an endless cycle and unable to grow. The song is a longing for the past, the desire to correct old wrongs for better rights, and ultimately getting to with time and age.

“I’ve always been a fan of idioms and this particular one always stuck with me. You have to make the most of what’s given to you in life and if it’s not given to you, you gotta go out and get it. This song is a reminder to myself that change is absolutely necessary and it’s what makes your life so colourful and special,” says Madelaine.

“Don’t get me wrong, this song is also about how much I hate Winter and want to stay in the happy medium that Autumn provides. But hey, seasons change for a reason.”

Madelaine De Leon thought she didn’t have a musical bone in her body (which she feared being that she’s Filipino and most Filos are all for karaoke).  Until she watched a movie called Juno which changed her life forever. Becoming obsessed with American indie rock, she was able to find her voice through the soundtrack, starting to write her own songs.

Learning classical guitar in her teens, she eventually found herself in an eternal marriage to the ukulele (a perfectly sized instrument being that Madelaine is less than 5 feet tall). She soon found herself studying Music at UNSW, only to find herself quitting after experiencing stage fright and imposter syndrome.

But life is funny, and halfway through changing degrees, she ended up finding out her eczema medication, which she was taking for years, was ironically making her sicker, leading her to undergo a drug withdrawal known as Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW). This experience led her to crave her felt tip pen, songwriting again as a form of escapism from the pain her body was enduring. Giving her a cathartic release, the songs she had written during that time which are now finally coming out of the woodwork are living proof of just how healing music can truly be.
