Virgin Mary Disco, the Naarm/Melbourne-based four-piece, brings new wave-infused indie rock with their latest single ‘Automation’. Off the back of their recent release ‘Modern Man’, ‘Automation’ sidesteps the post-punk style showcased in their debut single. Released April 21, ‘Automation’ is a track that sets these new-wave rockers aside.
Starting in early 2020 before a pandemic-induced hiatus, Virgin Mary Disco captures the classic post-punk and new-wave sounds of Britain. Influenced by the likes of Joy Division, New Order and The Cure, the whirlwind of clashing drums and rowdy guitars is true to their predecessors.
‘Automation’ is a lively, unruly, and unapologetic track. Deep-toned vocals catch on the heavy bassline. Introducing the melodic synth flourishes and rapid guitars, the single explodes into a chorus worthy of chanting. Following a similar rise and fall throughout, ‘Automation’ feels like a cliffhanger before being thrown into echoing vocals, ringing guitars, and head-banging-worthy drums.

Lyrically influenced by the continuous transformation of the workforce, Virgin Mary Disco’s ‘Automation’ is from the perspective of an AI machine overtaking earth. Set in a world run by the machine due to humans failing to take care of the earth in an efficient and organised manner, even the billionaires are scared. Bassist Liam Spicer-Quinn states: “We wanted the song to take the listener on a journey rather than just making one bold statement. When recording the song, we had the vision for it to sound almost ‘automated’ or machine-like, particularly in terms of the very straight drum beat, with that added delay on the hi-hats and snare (taking influence from post-punk’s experimental drum sounds) The drums and bass were meticulously recorded to achieve this.”
Inspired by the socioeconomic and political world around them, the band commentate on the events unfolding in modern society. From the effects of capitalism and rapid technological growth to sexism, populism and the pandemic that originally put their music to a stop, their lyrics are infused with classic punk testament.
Releasing their debut single ‘Modern Man’ in January, followed by a sold-out show at Cherry Bar (Naarm/Melbourne CBD), there is no sign of slowing down anytime soon with plenty more up their sleeve for 2023.
