“An unholy amount of noise… Ash Kerley sounds like a true rock’n’roll queen, as every word she utters drips with pure disdain” – The Music

“[Kerley is] a rising star… already making her mark through her incredible music and support for young women in the music industry” – The AU Review

“There is a genuine sense of command in [Kerley’s] guitar playing that dominates the listener experience in the best of ways. It’s masterful, ever intriguing, daunting and damn moreish. Top that off with a drummer that can run away with you and I am sold.” – Dave McCarthy, Laundry Echo

“[Marville take an] intensely human bare-bones approach” – Entertainment Cairns

“a driving and pummelling aural assault that builds like a tempestuous storm” – Weirdo Wasteland

“gritty and humour-tinged, rock n roll flair” – Music Is My Muse

Meanjin/Brisbane-based guitar-and-drums duo Marville today share their first new music in five years in the form of raw, righteously fiery new single ‘Fiction’, out Wednesday 31 May via new label home Psychic Hysteria (Plaster of Paris, Shrimpwitch, Astral Skulls). An indignant rumination on the harm that religious indoctrination can have on young minds, ‘Fiction’ is the first taste of Marville’s as-yet-unannounced new album, and arrives alongside visuals and the announcement of a two-date single launch tour in Naarm/Melbourne and Meanjin/Brisbane – all details below.

Recorded at Airlock Studios with lauded producer Joe Hammond (Jen Cloher, Courtney Barnett, Fraser A. Gorman), who describes frontperson Ash Kerley’s idiosyncratic approach to noise guitar as “virtuosic”, ‘Fiction’ is a snarling beast of a thing, a defiantly incandescent take-down inspired by Kerley’s (who also founded the local chapter of international program Girls Rock!) experience growing up going to a religious school, her brazen vocals in constant, frustrated conversation with bandmate Doug Palmer’s brutal, driving drums.

Kerley says of the track, “This is something I’ve really needed to express for some time… it was a bit of a cult. When I talk about drugs in the song, it’s not about illicit drugs – it’s about some of the kids not being allowed to take Panadol – if they had a headache, they just prayed about it. I’d go to youth services where they would do an altar call and the band would just keep hammering away on the same three major chords. You absolutely felt something, and you totally believed it was God calling you forward. It was manipulative. Far more intoxicating than any substance I’ve ever tried. I guess that’s what keeps people going back for more? I do think that belief can add so much richness and comfort to peoples’ lives. But it’s just not for me.”

Psychic Hysteria’s Kurt Eckardt shares of the label’s decision to sign the duo, “We’ve been fans for yonks, not just of the music but of the humans behind this impeccable rhythmic and melodic wall of sound. Teaming up with them for this release makes so much sense, they’re such respected members of the DIY music community. There’s such a visceral quality to Marville’s output – there are soft moments, but most of it is like a fist full of razor blades and a punch to the gut. At face value so much rock n’ roll seems simplistic, but Marville has a depth that many 3, 4 and 5 pieces could never match.”

Having built a cult following via their trademark energy that’s been described as a “barely contained fury”(Weirdo Wasteland), a scrappy DIY ethos and constant community-building (they’re the underground favourites of alternative, punk and rock stapes like Cable Ties, Moody Beaches and HITS), Marville’s immense, formidable sound has seen them embark several national and regional tours, playing with acts like Camp Cope, Cable Ties, The Superjesus, The Clouds & Dark Fair, as well as festivals like Gizzfest & Sonic Masala. The 2017 recipients of the Billy Thorpe Scholarship’s two LPs – 2013’s Vayan Con Dios and 2018’s Terra Alpha – have found support with the likes of triple j, Double J, The Music, Weirdo Wasteland, The West End Magazine, The Cairns Post, NQ Music Press, The Soundcheck, Music Is My Muse, AMNplify, Triple R, PBSFM, 4ZZZ, Mountain District Radio, BayFM and more.

To celebrate the release of ‘Fiction’, Marville will be playing live dates in Naarm and Meanjin, supported by O.R.C at the former and Whoroborus – a project formed by one of Kerley’s Girls Rock! Brisbanealumns – at the latter. Marville’s yet-to-be-announced third album is due for release in 2023 via Psychic Hysteria.
