Upcoming songwriter Nicole Gandy has today announced her debut single Mint Ice Cream, a beautiful, bittersweet but upbeat track about stumbling across memories of a relationship that has ended — out today. This is the first ever single from Nicole, who has cut her teeth performing locally in Sydney over the past few years.

Mint Ice Cream is expertly crafted; as bouncy and catchy as an early cut from The Jungle Giants, but as thought-provoking and full of heart as a Stella Donnelly or Julia Jacklin single. The chorus is completely irresistible — Nicole’s gentle voice sits above the mix, describing those tiny little moments only really known by two people in a relationship, which hang in the ether once the relationship has ended.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Nicole says, “I found a photo of me on my mum’s phone that I didn’t realise she had taken on my birthday a couple of years ago. It was me sitting in front of my birthday cake smiling and looking at my partner at the time. The relationship has ended since and the song is written more from the weird feelings around looking back on a past relationship — going through old relationship photos (generally a bad idea) after some time has passed so the strong heartbreak feelings are over but there’s still nostalgia there.”

Written with Dom Corse, Mint Ice Cream is a remarkable debut single — a singular, fully-formed vision and a sound that is completely Nicole’s own. When reflecting on how her relationship with music came to be, Nicole says, “My parents always had the radio on around the house when I was growing up, so I’ve always been surrounded by music. I moved through obsessions of watching Shania Twain performances, to playing The Sound Of White by Missy Higgins on my CD player every day after school. I was in school bands playing trombone (ha) growing up and always wrote diaries but never combined the two until I got older.”
