Melbourne 5-piece This Space is Ours continue to build their sonic identity with new single ‘Gone in May’. This single takes a daring departure from their previous releases, infusing elements of metalcore into their signature pop-punk sound. ‘Gone in May’ is an emotionally charged composition that delves deep into the tumultuous journey of grief, drawing inspiration from personal experiences.

“This is our heaviest release to date, both in terms of genre and the subject matter. The lyrics are incredibly personal and inspired by the sudden passing of my dad when I was 10 years old and the subsequent anger and confusion I felt for many years in the aftermath. Gone In May covers all of the emotions that come with losing a loved one; longing sadness, anger, confusion, and conflicting thoughts on what happens to us after death. Gone In May was very much written for myself. I’ve always processed my emotions through music.”
Gemma Dunsmore, This Space is Ours

This Space is Ours has always used music as a means to process and express their emotions authentically and creatively. This latest single is the next sonic chapter in a band well-versed in vulnerability and  stands as a testament to their resilience and determination. The band’s vocalist, Gemma further adds, “Growing up and dealing with the passing of my dad, I was always on the hunt for a song that captured the exact way I felt but they always seemed to miss the mark. They never seemed quite angry enough. So, with the help of the rest of the band, I wrote one myself.”

Recorded at a combination of venues, including Pony Music, Studio Delos, and United POP,’Gone in May’ has been meticulously crafted with mixing by Beau McKee, a renowned producer whose portfolio includes collaborations with Earth Caller, Christopher Dicker, and Between You & Me.

Accompanying the release of ‘Gone in May’ is a warped and surreal music video directed by John Stokes (Mediaroid). The video takes viewers on a twisted journey of an uncanny birthday party, where the imagery serves as a metaphor for an interrupted childhood, reflecting the personal experiences of the band’s vocalist, Gemma. Injecting dark and disturbing elements into the innocent backdrop of a children’s birthday party, the video gradually descends into chaos. With complete creative control granted by John Stokes, This Space is Ours constructed a meticulously detailed set, including self-built walls within a makeshift shed, allowing them to create a vivid and unforgettable visual narrative.

Having previously shared stages with acclaimed artists such as Proposal, We Set Signals, PSTCRDS, Synge, and NORA on the Melbourne legs of their tours, This Space is Ours continues to assert themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the pop-punk scene. Their previous single, ‘Apology,’ propelled them to new heights in their career, expanding their fanbase and garnering airplay on triple j’s ‘Short Fast Loud.’ as well as high praise from media outlets including Kill Your Stereo, Ramona Magazine, The AU Review, Amnplify and more, further solidified their growing reputation.
