How did the band come together? Briefly, what’s been happening since then?
We were high school friends and just thought I’d be fun to start a band. Recently, it’s become less communal with us all spread out and bit busier but we’re still all great mates.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I would maybe describe our sound as roots-influenced, alt-rock but we can be intentionally diverse musically at times. I don’t feel any fealty to any particular genre, but the lyrics and songwriting always take precedence.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
There’s so many, but I would say my greatest inspiration is Bob Dylan. The abandon with which he always followed his artistic vision sticks with me. His literary approach blazed a trail.

Your second album ‘The Great and The Terrible has just been released (congrats)! Describe its origin and evolution.
Thank you. I knew before the first one, that the second album would more acoustic and folk influenced but beyond that, things changed. During the writing process, I became inspired by The Wizard of Oz which played a large role thematically.

What are the signature tracks, and which is your favorite (to listen to, to play live)?
My favourite track to listen to off the new album is Come Around Here, so I’m excited to play that one live more. I also really enjoy playing An August Night and Sadly Ever After off our last album.

You have a show coming up on August 5th in Brisbane – what are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect? Any other tours or events coming up soon?
We’re playing with Elbury. A band I’m a huge fan of. From Cedarsmoke, people can expect some stripped back versions of songs, featuring plenty from the new album. I’m also playing at It’s Still A Secret on 6 October for the Listen-Up songwriting competition, so people can also see me there.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I’d have to go with The Beatles. They were such a brilliant, tight band and after watching the Let It Be documentary, they just looked like so much fun to play with.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
My aspiration is to just keep writing songs and making albums. That’s the most important thing.
My goal is to always improve as a songwriter and musician. I feel that I’m always learning more and improving with each release, so I would just like to continue on that trajectory.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
I don’t have any great advice for being successful as an artist, but I would just tell them to make the music you want to make and don’t worry about anything else.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Most of my time with music is solitary, whether it’s listening, writing or playing, so getting a chance to share it with other people is really special. The highlights for me have been releasing the albums. It’s always been a dream to make an album so to get to do that will always be special to me.
