.

This is Polaris’ third studio album, and with each album a band releases comes expectation. “Fatalism” is an album that fans have eagerly anticipated since the release of their three singles: “Inhumane,” “Nightmare,” and “Overflow.”

This album also carries a tinge of melancholy, being the final album featuring guitarist Ryan Siew. Leading up to the album’s release, along with the three singles, were three accompanying music videos, the last of which pays tribute to the remarkable talent of Ryan and his exceptional guitar skills.

It’s evident that whatever arises from this album will become part of Ryan’s legacy, along with their previous albums, “The Death of Me” and “The Mortal Coil,” both highly acclaimed by their fans. However, with each new release, the band has consistently managed to surpass their previous achievements, leaving us curious to see if “Fatalism” will reach the heights set by its predecessors.

The opening track, “Harbinger” sets an eerie tone, gradually transitioning into cleans that seem to carry an electronic overlay. The drums by Dan add an anticipatory element, and the track gradually builds, culminating in Jamie’s powerful screamed vocals. “Harbinger” serves as a strong opening track, encapsulating the true essence of Polaris’ signature sound.

Flowing seamlessly from “Harbinger” the second single “Nightmare” bursts forth with the characteristic guitar, bass, and drum interplay that defines Polaris’ style. Jamie’s intense screams are joined by Jake’s clean vocals, creating a dynamic contrast. The lyrics of “Nightmare” resonate deeply, reflecting recent events, imbuing the song with added impact and relevance. The drumming and lyrics harmonize to convey a sense of uncertainty about the future, mirroring the world’s current state of flux.

“Parasites” the following song, starts with an electronic drumbeat, instantly igniting a desire to move with its infectious groove. This track diverges slightly from the earlier ones on the album, presenting a unique flavour. Jamie’s signature crushing screams remain, though the song evokes a semblance of 2000s bands while maintaining Polaris’ distinct heaviness.

The third single, “Overflow” arrives next, accompanied by a poignant music video featuring Ryan Siew. It begins with Jamie showcasing clean vocals, a facet he introduced in “The Death of Me” with “Masochist.” In “Overflow,” Jamie and Jake combine their clean vocals, deviating from Polaris’ norm where screams dominate. Although screams remain present, the song’s focus is different. Thought-provoking lyrics like “Where do I shelter when it’s raining inside, no peace and quiet from the noise in my mind” evoke reflection, leaving listeners appreciating the song’s beauty as it concludes.

“With Regards”, the fifth track, commences as if it’s a heartfelt letter to someone significant. Initially serene, Jamie’s screams unexpectedly pierce the tranquillity, intertwining with Ryan and Rick’s guitar work as well as Dan’s drums. This song encapsulates the Polaris I’ve come to know, balancing a commercial edge with their characteristic heaviness. Given recent events, listening to the lyrics evokes a tearful yet headbanging response, maintaining a consistent emotional resonance throughout the album.

The next track, “Inhumane” serves as the album’s first single. It begins with a groovy bass riff accompanied by Dan’s drums. Jamie’s vocals shift between whispers and impassioned screams, instilling a sense of eeriness, particularly when the lyrics echo shared experiences of struggle. The vocals seem to channel a deep-seated frustration with life’s challenges.

Following suit is “The Crossfire” with its captivating guitar riff and Dan’s frantic drumming ushering in clean vocals that unexpectedly give way to Jamie’s fierce screams. The powerful riffs, soaring vocals, and pounding drums of “The Crossfire” promise an unforgettable live experience. This song, like the rest of the album, builds upon its predecessor, demonstrating an unbroken chain of compelling tracks.

“Dissipate” promptly follows, characterized by the unmistakable sound of Ryan’s skilful guitar work. The blast beats from Dan add a new layer of intensity, and the interplay between Jamie and Jake’s vocals enriches the song’s dynamics. This track, poised to be a fan favourite, seamlessly incorporates the breakdowns Polaris is known for, compelling listeners to move in synchrony with the music.

“As After Touch” the third-to-last track, begins gently, gradually layering in guitars and evoking emotions that highlight the album’s impending conclusion. The music and lyrics intertwine to create an evocative experience, accentuated by Jamie’s emotive delivery. The inevitable breakdown triggers both headbanging and deep reflection, encapsulating the album’s essence.

Titled “Fault Line” the penultimate track promises seismic sonic impact. Like other tracks, it deviates from previous albums, showcasing Polaris’ evolving sound while remaining true to their core. The trajectory set by their previous works is upheld in “Fatalism” with each track raising the bar higher than the last. The album maintains a consistent level of quality throughout.

The concluding track, “All in Vein” carries a poignant ambience, gradually transitioning from whispered vocals and gentle guitar riffs to an explosion of sound. Jamie’s screams punctuate the song, followed by Jake’s clean vocals, mirroring the journey Polaris has taken us on throughout the album. As the final note resonates, it becomes clear that “Fatalism” is a triumph, a fitting culmination of Polaris’ evolution.

With a flawless score of 10/10, “Fatalism” stands as a testament to the band’s artistry and growth. The accomplishment of this album is undeniable, a testament to the band’s dedication and creativity. Polaris should undoubtedly take pride in the masterpiece they’ve created.

My score – 10/10
