Emerging Naarm/Melbourne-based vocalist, rapper and songwriter MEGHNA (she/her) today shares her dynamic new single ‘2045’ – a captivating reflection on ageing, the nature of time, and wrestling with Peter Pan syndrome set two decades in the future. The single arrives alongside a neon-lit live video that combines performances of the new track, and of her previous single ‘Pacifist Philosophy’, directed by MEGHNA herself and visionary Benny Gregs. ‘2045’ is out everywhere now, stream HERE.

Written deep in the throes of lockdown boredom and inspired by the gritty, metallic feel of songs like Rihanna’s ‘Bitch Better Have My Moneyand Japanese pop group Sundannayuzuyully’s ‘LOOK AT ME NOW, the existential, disorienting but enthralling track sprung forth from a sudden, painfully acute awareness of the break-neck passage of time. Struck by this unsettling realisation, Meghna penned the lyrics to ‘2045’ in fifteen minutes, jumping straight into her wardrobe-turned-recording-booth to lay down a demo for producer Simon Dobson, whose heady layers of distorted bass and sparkling embellishments pull the track even further into an otherworldly, fantastical realm – exacerbated even further by its eerie AI artwork by ARIA-award winning artist She Is Aphrodite, depicting the ageing process.

Meghna shares, “‘2045’ is about how time moves increasingly fast as you grow older, and suddenly you wake up in 2045, for example, and you wonder where all that time went! I had long-been weirded out by the fact that I was turning 20, and I felt like I was suffering from Peter-Pan syndrome, with my soul stuck in my mid teens. I don’t know what it is about getting older, but when you turn 20, it is almost as if someone has put your life on 1.5x speed, and years are passing like months which are passing like weeks, which are passing like days, etc. I couldn’t believe where the time had gone. As far as I knew, I had finished high school yesterday. A time when the years were super long and the days were short. Now the days are long and the years are short. Not sure which I prefer.”

With roots in some of the richest cultures in India and driven by a love of hip hop and high-level production, Meghna’s genre-defying style is only enhanced by her introspective lyrics which challenge the listener to think critically, previously on display via her recent singlePacifist Philosophy’.

Meghna – whose name translates to “the one who walks on clouds” – has known that music was her expression of choice since she released her first song at age 12. Her sound and message have been informed by her Tamil and Bengali backgrounds, her growing passion for advocacy as a law and human rights student, and hip hop and rock influences that span from Queen, to Raja Kumari, to Rihanna. She notably collaborated with luxury French-Japanese fashion brand Maison Kitsuné under their Kitsuné Musique arm on her song ‘Hypnotising’ (produced by Simon Dobson), and collaborated  with  UK-based producer and DJ TaylorX on the 2022 singles ‘So High’ and ‘Lose’. Her singles ‘In My DNA’, ‘Hypnotising’ and ‘Pacifist Philosophy’ collectively saw support from the likes of The Guardian, VICE, Acclaim Magazine, Purple Sneakers, AUD$, Music Feeds, AAA Backstage, The Music, MILKY, Eat This Music, AMNplify, triple j, triple j Unearthed and across community radio nationally.
