Brisbane/Meanjin’s alt-rock darlings, The Dandys, have unveiled their eagerly awaited debut EP, ‘Sex and Feuds’ (Friday, September 15).
With their electrifying showcase at BIGSOUND 2023 and a standout performance at Splendour In The Grass, the band have undoubtedly been making a mark everywhere they go.
Now, with their debut EP ‘Sex and Feuds’, they bring an emotionally charged journey loosely based around the five stages of grief following the loss of a close relationship. It offers a fresh perspective on a universal story, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the entire EP.
Overflowing with boldness and spirited energy, the band exhibits an uncharted elegance as they juxtapose their alt-rock/ grunge elements with interludes of tranquil and tender soundscapes, featuring mesmerizing reverberating guitar melodies, enchanting vocals and expansive, limitless riffs.

Opening the EP is the melancholic and dreamy track ‘Falling’, which contrasts soft, sparse verses that allow Mads Protheroe’s stunning vocals to shine through before erupting into a belter of a chorus. Featuring a dreamy guitar solo followed by a bass solo, the track closes in a high-dynamic, heart-pulsing fashion.
‘Broke Me Down’ follows, capturing the essence of post-breakup heartache, complete with the pit in your stomach, placing blame, and the temptation to swear off dating forever. Sweeping through with a previously unseen gracefulness, this song is a soothing, serene, and tender masterpiece that aligns perfectly with its underlying theme.
‘State of Mind’ reveals itself as a personal favourite for Protheroe, serving as a sonic representation of her tumultuous mental state at the time of writing. The track balances heavy, overwhelming energy with moments of calm introspection, creating a deeply introspective experience.

The EP takes a turn towards upbeat energy with ‘Temporary Fix’,’ one of the faster tracks on the record. Filled with palm-muted guitars and smashing drums, this song embodies catharsis, encouraging listeners to stand up for themselves and walk away from toxic situations.
Concluding the EP with a bang, ‘Gums’ takes listeners on a dynamic rollercoaster ride with grunge-infused blues and euphoric, high-energy psychedelic guitar riffs.
Overall, ‘Sex and Feuds’ strikes a balance between wild energy and graceful composure. It has the band delivering a gripping and textured blend of alt-rock with stunning moments of gracefulness and finesse, showing the depth of the band that is so much more than wall-to-wall rock. Adding to the album’s allure are Protheroe’s poised vocals, which demonstrate a remarkable range and a maturity that belies her years. Her performance showcases a stunning pop sensibility that elevates the entire experience.
The debut EP, ‘Sex and Feuds’ by The Dandys, is officially out now!

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
