NAAKI SOUL

NAAKI SOUL

.

Joining them across their five headline shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington are:

(Brisbane): Emerging from the industrial heart of Beijing, CN, as nothing more than a solo high school recording project in a shoebox apartment, 22-year-old Naaki Soul spent her teenage years recording songs on her laptop through a stolen interface. Frequenting internet forums, she found solace in learning new home production techniques, garnering a modest online audience with her early output of experimental sounds from the bedroom. A few years later, she would find herself embedded in Meanjin’s proliferative underground music scene. Her debut LP ‘Nylon Songs’ draws inspiration from 90s slacker rock, Midwest emo, noise pop, and post-hardcore; a hemisphere away from the origin of its influences.

.

CHITRA

CHITRA

.

(Melbourne): With her bold, clarion indie-rock music, Melbourne singer-songwriter Chitra navigates the pressures and anxieties of relationships with the grace and dexterity of a dancer. Raised on the Bellarine Peninsula, Chitra found her calling in music early on. Her acclaimed self-titled debut EP was a wise-beyond-its-years document of young adulthood that confirmed Chitra’s preternatural talent as an observer of relationships and human behaviour. Drawing from influences such as Big Thief’s Adrienne Lenker and Julia Jacklin, it was a sharply-realised debut that announced Chitra as one of Melbourne’s most talented songwriters. Described as a “bold and affecting” songwriter by Triple J’s Declan Byrne, Chitra quickly won praise and adulation from tastemakers including Triple R, Pilerats and Fbi Radio, as well as support slots alongside artists like Lisa Mitchell, Vacations and Jaguar Jonze.

.

DYLAN ATLANTIS

DYLAN ATLANTIS

.

(Sydney): Dylan Atlantis (she/they) is a Filipino-Australian singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Western Sydney. Sonically, Dylan fuses the grit of grunge and indie rock, with the sweet soulfulness of rnb – think Syd from The Internet meets Deb Never, influenced by N.E.R.D. and Yves Tumor.

.

CLAUDIA FOREVER

CLAUDIA FOREVER

.

(Sydney): Confessional and hyper-focused, Claudia Forever combines the crystalline clarity of pop with an intrinsically DIY approach. Recognisable as the voice of Claudia Schmidt from indie bands Lorelei and Betty & Oswald, Claudia Forever marks the first time hearing the Sydney-based artist on her own. Dripping with glistening hyper pop moments, while other times retreating into lush art pop landscapes, the synth-driven tracks skirt between different shades of pop, Claudia’s pastel vocals blending softness and auto-tune, all the while retaining a raw, indie sensibility.

.

ELLIOTT DAWSON

ELLIOTT DAWSON

.

(Wellington): Elliott Dawson plays angry art rock inspired by post-rock and South London jazz, striking a contrast between the eloquent and unhinged. Fresh off the back of the release of his debut album ‘Hang Low’, Elliott Dawson returns in 2023 with a bundle of new material, slated for release in early 2024, following a harrowing summer of festivals. Dawson has recently supported British absurdists Black Midi, and Wellington favourites Revulva and Wiri Donna. Dawson is joined by his band of Pōneke dream people – Olivia Campion, Harrison Scholes, Reuben Topzand, and Elizabeth Hocking.

RINGLETS

.

(Auckland): Ringlets have been supplying Auckland locals with the most reliable Post-Punk Equipment (P.P.E.) in the upper North Island. With a highly durable, machine-tested rhythm section (A. Poulsen + A. Grey) and two of Auckland’s leading lyrical & melodic consultants (L. Towers + L. Reynolds), Ringlets are fast building a solid reputation. The group’s self-titled debut record commits to a punchy, boisterous sound from the first note. Produced by De Stevens (Marlin’s Dreaming) and Ringlets themselves, the impressive songbook certainly has the potential to shine in 2023’s booming alternative sphere. One thing is certain: Ringlets can only remain our best kept secret for so long.

Sorry – Asha Lorenz (vox/guitar), Louis O’Bryen (vox/guitar), Lincoln Barrett (drums), Campbell Baum (bass) and Marco Pini (electronics) – have created their own distinctive musical world, one that draws together a shared passion for lo-fi sounds of grunge, trap, and shoegaze. As one of the UK’s hottest rising outfits, 2022’s Anywhere But Here was described by NME as “frequently taking sudden turns that you don’t see coming”.
