Described as ‘the little black dress in your wardrobe, an instant classic,’ Sydney based songwriter, producer and performer Ruby Jackson has positioned herself at the heart of the Australian R&B/Jazz scene. Since completing her studies in composition at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ruby has been flourishing into a world-class, authentic creator of music with songs that strike a chord with her audience.

‘Sweeter For Me’ is Ruby Jackson’s debut EP. A completely timeless body of work that is vibrating with unique musical vision and is perfectly of the moment. Fueled by 2000s Pop/R&B nostalgia, each track captures honest and raw stories that dissect love, growth and change, which can be felt in the organic sonics of each of the five tracks. Everything revolves around Ruby’s effortlessly soulful tone, complimented with beautiful, intricate backing vocal arrangements and classy production.

“‘Sweeter For Me’ is a time capsule of my early twenties, figuring out what is best for me when it comes to understanding love interests, change and growing older,” said Ruby. “I got to know myself a little more when writing these songs, and I think the subject matter of each story inspired the EP the most.”

Produced by Finbar Stuart (BOY SODA, Maina Doe) and mixed by Stefan Du Randt (Mac Miller, Budjerah), the five song EP features the singles ‘Guilty Pleasure’, a gorgeous, beautifully crafted R&B/Pop track, dripping with soulfulness, dreaminess and the most dazzling harmonies, and the powerful ‘You’ve Changed’, a song that questions those who can’t seem to handle their friends growing up.

The title track of the EP, ‘Sweeter For Me’ is the focus on release. The song invites the listener to get lost in Ruby’s stream of consciousness as she sings about a past relationship with a gentle, elegant touch. Ruby’s vocals radiate with warmth and soul as she delivers this intimate performance, carried by beautiful, intricate backing vocals that swirl around her storytelling. The song creates a nostalgic atmosphere like no other, but it really peaks at the chorus with this gorgeous, 3-part harmony arrangement that floats by.

“’Sweeter For Me’ is one of the more vulnerable songs I’ve written,” confesses Ruby. “It’s about the process of a break up, learning to trust your instinct and the beautiful reward of that. The day after writing ‘Sweeter For Me’, I had plans to have a sing with my two very good friends, Ebs and Arlo, and I decided to show them this song. It became something a lot more that day. Hearing these incredible vocalists make one of your songs burst to life. I knew that I’d want them singing across the track for the final studio version, so a few months later, they joined me up in the Blue Mountains to track the vocals. It was a very special time.”

Coming from a jazz centric background, Ruby has discovered a way to create this multi-generational vision of classic music that has a modern twist, drawing on the likes of UK R&B icons Lily Allen, Mahalia and Joy Crookes. A regular performer in and around Sydney, Ruby has also been a go to vocalist for the likes of Dean Brady, BOY SODA and has performed at Brisbane’s Bigsound and Sydney’s SXSW music conferences. 

Ruby will be launching ‘Sweeter For Me’ in true style with a hometown show in Sydney on Saturday 4th November at The Lady Hampshire in Camperdown. Fans are in for a treat with Ruby’s catalogue of songs being performed live with a ten-piece band. Joining Ruby on stage will be singer-songwriters Ellen Mara and andie.
