“Floodlights are deadly serious, politically engaged and not afraid to rock out… inspiring and uplifting.” – The Guardian
“The Melbourne-based indie-rockers seized upon any opportunity to ride circular rhythms and riffs into the twilight, not so much jamming as meditating on a phrase.” – Rolling Stone (US)
“…brings together self-aware lyricism with charismatic musicality. In a similar vein to bands like The War on Drugs, Real Estate, Floodlights pack their music with passion and great pace.” – Double J

Following an “outstanding” set at Meredith Music Festival and two sold out VIC-coastal shows this past weekend, Naarm/Melbourne five- piece FLOODLIGHTS today announce an east coast tour stopping in Kabi Kabi Country/Eumundi, Meanjin/Brisbane, Eora/Sydney and Naarm/Melbourne this March and April, with special guests to be announced. These shows will close the proverbial chapter on their Australian Music Prize-shortlisted second album Painting of my Time, before the band bunkers down to start working on new music. Tickets to all shows are on sale now from floodlightsband.com.
Floodlights are playing Laneway Festival in Naarm/Melbourne this Saturday, and lutruwita’s Panama Festival in March. Full details below.
Floodlights have been non-stop following the release of Painting of My Time, with more than 50 headline shows across so-called-Australia, the UK and Europe plastered with sold out signs (including two Corner Hotels), and support slots with Pavement, The Killers and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. Their lauded live performance has taken them to the iconic Green Man Festival, End of the Road Festival, Tent Pole Music Festival, Harvest Rock Festival, Falls Festival, SXSW Austin and a much-talked-about about set at Reeperbahn, with the photo-worthy crowd reflecting Rolling Stone’s “quick to become a buzzed-about band” review. The band’s full circle moment came at Meredith Music Festival last December – they promised each other they would form a band after being there together five years earlier – the stirring energy the crowd brought “is something we will always remember,” the band shared.

Recorded live on a 24-track tape machine over three days by Nao Anzai at Soundpark Studios in Naarm/Melbourne, Painting of My Time marked an evolution as a band and individuals, fuelled by life’s singular and shared experiences. Its rock ‘n’ roll rawness filtered through a soundscape of dynamic post-punk and art-rock, underpinned by the layering of trumpet, grand piano, violin, synth, and of course the harmonica – that harmonica – highlighted their progression, resulting in an emotive, intriguing, and broadened sound. Painting of My Time welcomed Floodlights to new fans young and old, and praise from all corners including The Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, Drift Records (UK – Record of the Week), NME, Rolling Stone, JUNKEE, The Big Issue, Monster Children, Pilerats, triple j, Double J and widespread community radio support, notably Album of the Week at Triple R, Feature Album at 2SER, SYN FM, RTRFM and Edge Radio, and Packet Album at FBi Radio.
The album is a journey of observations, reshaping views and identity, elaborating on themes of personal turbulence, self-exploration, and the Australian landscape as a form of escapism. Taking their form from scrawled poetic prose, Floodlights’ are honest above all, with lyricists Ashlee Kehoe and Louis Parsons writing expressively and with purpose. “One of the greatest joys of writing is harnessing the transition from a lyrical idea, to a fully formed composition that reflects the feelings you had when you wrote the lyrics,” Kehoe shared.

Formed in Naarm/Melbourne in 2018, Floodlights – Louis Parsons (vocals, guitar), Ashlee Kehoe (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Joe Draffen (bass), Archie Shannon (drums, percussion) and Sarah Hellyer (vocals, trumpet, piano) – have built a loyal following based on powerful lyrics, impressive musicianship, and their compelling stage presence which constantly pushes the edges of their sound. The intimacy between them allows their sense of storytelling to flow naturally from songwriting to their resonating finales, holding audiences close in quietened moments and give them the soundtrack to run wild the next.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
