INTRODUCING PAXY – the moniker of Melbourne-based musician Bridget Leila (she/her) – melds pop sensibilities within introspective lyricism, leaving behind an aftertaste reminiscent of an earthy red wine and a vogue cigarette. Her sound draws references from the pop, blues, soul, and RnB she grew up listening to, and today she unveils her debut single ‘Sober’,

Sober started as a cathartic journal entry and turned into a song that she refers to as “an ironic moment of sobriety that reflects on a cycle of dysfunction and unavailability.” It’s these shameless submissions of late- night honesty that have become the foundation of the project.

A swelling 70s mellotron blooms into the candid first line ‘you’ll never love me when you’re sober’, PAXY’s vocals are injected with grit and resentment and accompanied by tight layers of backing vocals, dark and soulful, saturated in a lush reverb. Working out of Studio Chaddy in Melbourne’s South-East with producers Michael Bradshaw and Jeremy Chua, throughout the mixing process they experimented with different harmonies, vocal stacks and ambient guitar landscapes to evoke a depth of emotion that toes the fine line between hope and hopelessness.

A twisted piano hook, distorted drums, guitar swells and a thumping bass define the pulse of the track. PAXY had a few sonic references, wanting “a track that had Lana Del Rey ‘West Coast-esque’ drums and swelling guitar, and a brewing, melancholic piano hook to form a heavy atmosphere.”

Sampling a train announcement that’s personal to the narrative, ‘Sober’ is a vulnerable admission of willingness to endure the ugly in the hope of something genuine. Lyrically it’s repetitive, but PAXY says that was the intention. “I wanted to write something that sounded like an exhausting repetitive cycle, ending with a verse, as opposed to a chorus, that leaves things somewhat unresolved.”
