First Night: Blak Day Out 2024 celebrates some of the continent’s most exciting First Nations artists alongside a selection of seriously good eats as a string of pop-up bars, street food stalls, Indigenous retailers, outdoor music stages, and entertainment brings King St to life from 3:30pm-9:30pm on Saturday June 1. This family-friendly event will also feature a Silent Disco with DJ Kritty from 5pm-8pm, live mural painting by Sam Harrison, and dance activations from The First Creatives.

Celebrated, award-winning singer and songwriter Emma Donovan has toured and recorded with the likes of Paul Kelly, The Teskey Brothers, Paul Grabowsky, and the late Uncle Archie Roach and Aunty Ruby Hunter, and is also known for her work with acclaimed rhythm combo The Putbacks and the extraordinary Black Arm Band project. Part of the famed Donovan family of singers of the Gumbaynggirr people on her mother’s side, and the Yamatji people on her fathers, Emma regularly performs songs in Gumbaynggirr and Noongar traditional languages, and shares stories to provide her audiences with an understanding of Country and community.

Proud First Nations artists, rapper and MC Dallas Woods, triple j Blak Out host and Yuin MC Nooky and Gumbaynggirr singer-songwriter Angus Field are 3%. The name is a nod to their people who make up just 3% of the Australian population. With their hard-hitting debut album KILLING THE DEAD about to drop, head along to Blak Day Out and be moved by the unifying power songs that spotlight themes of First Nations deaths in custody, closing the gap and reclaiming stolen land.

As individuals, Zeppelin Hamilton and Clayton Allen have honed their respective crafts, performing and writing alongside hard hitters like Julia Jacklin, Dan Sultan, Faye Webster, Middle Kids and Emily Wurramarra – all the while developing their acclaimed psychedelic music project Velvet Trip. They’ve been featured in the NY Times (T Mag), RUSSH, NME Aus, added to rotation on triple j, were selected to be part of Mushroom Groups‘ First Nations Pathway Program and played at SXSW and Lost Paradise to name just a few highlights. Don’t miss them at First Night: Blak Day Out!

With a sound inspired by reggae, alt-pop, soul and funk, BADASSMUTHA weaves her stories through lyrical wit-poetry and catchy melody; her self-assured confidence front and centre in both delivery and messaging. A Githabul, Migunberri-Yugumbeh woman she is a seasoned multidisciplinary artist who has performed with the likes of Xavier Rudd, Blue King Brown, Hot Brown Honey and Polytoxic, along with releasing music for Children as ‘Alinta & Waveney’.

The Ancient Bloods are a First Nations, youth transitional band run by Digi Youth Arts. The third iteration made up of Gara Doolah, Shaiesha Towler, Emelia Stacy and Gillian McInnes brings us into 2024 along with the release of their first EP Blended. This album stirs up generational hope, resistance and good vibes along with smooth coastal melodies which pay tribute to Yugembeh country by the Pacific Ocean, where the EP was created.

“Blak Day Out is a space for community to come together and celebrate the music being made by this continent’s very First musicians. The line-up gives audiences a taste of the vast world of Indigenous music which should be celebrated all year round,” says Blak Social’s Creative Director Alethea Beetson

First Night: Blak Day Out is the opening event of Open Season, a stellar curated program of music and art running from May to August 2024.

Other Open Season highlights include Explosions in the Sky (USA), INIKO (USA), Sky Ferreira (USA), Two Another (AUS), An Evening with Marlon Williams (NZ), Blonde Redhead (USA), Pond (AUS), Dirty Three (AUS), Ladyhawke (NZ) and many more.
