Stitcher are a young band with their sights set firmly upwards. The four-piece have just released their ambitious new single, “Distant Mirage” and it’s a glorious journey through the vast soundscapes of desert and psychedelic rock with a uniquely Aussie twist.

The band swim in the water of legendary rock ‘n’ roll acts like the Led Zeppelin, Pat Benator, The Who, Janis Joplin and ACDC. “Distant Mirage” glimmers with all those influences and is a throwback to the old days of fiery vocals, searing guitar riffs and vibrantly immersive production. The production on the song stands out in the deliberate imperfect choices made and the live feel that it evokes giving this tasty morsel meat on its bones. It’s gritty, real, a little self-indulgent but always a trip from start to finish.

Singer Annabelle Piper’s vocals soar and dive like an eagle, serenely navigating the songs dynamic highs and lows with a lot of power. She’s a solid match for Sykes’ guitar work which begins in alluring fashion before becoming ablaze in the second half with a evocative solo. The arabian undertones give this song a big sense of grandeur and adventure, along with Miles Agius (bass) and Harry Calhoun (drums) in the rhythm section propelling everything along with magnetic energy.

Those who like their rock ‘n’ roll served like an invitation to a quest into the mysterious and wondrous will like what they hear in “Distant Mirage”. Especially in the second half when the song amps up the intensity as if the listener has experienced a revelation.

“Distant Mirage” asks to take you on a journey into the unknown and pays off with bold brash confidence. It’s great stuff from Stitcher and shows the mystique of this emerging band that are forging their own path with alluring songwriting.
