Melbourne’s Subterranean Deadbeats are so old school they make it sound like it’s 1979, so garage they’re applying to their local council to build an extension and so punk they’ve already built it.
1 August 2024 sees Subterranean Deadbeats release 7” single ‘Hang Me Out To Dry’ backed with ‘As Above, So Below’, a couple of hefty slices of blues drenched Aussie garage rock.
“We’re young,” said Deadbeats vocalist and guitarist, Chris Taranto, “we’ve only been making music together for a few years, but we know what’s what. We’re putting these songs out now, on vinyl, because the world needs more edge. People spend too much time online avoiding contact with each other, Spotify’s stealing every new artist’s content to make the big end of town rich, so we thought we’d do something about it.”
Edge is bang on when it comes to these tracks. They feature chainsaw guitars, moments of woozy blues like you’re just coming up and the howling drawl of Taranto’s voice —sometimes whine, sometimes elegiac lament and always compelling.
“We do out of kilter like our lives depend on it,” said Taranto. “We know we’re swimming against a tide of slick pop and Tik Tok moments, but we don’t care, we know we’ve got something special.”

There are moments in time when the world stops to take notice of the freaks who are deliberately out of step, peeking out from between the legs of the establishment as it marches into oblivion. Moments when a saviour comes to bring colour to a world so bland it’s crying out to be torn a new one.
That’s what Subterranean Deadbeats are here to do, tear us all a new one and, in the process give us all a bit of hope that rock and roll’s not dead, it’s just been resting for a while waiting for this Melbourne quartet to come along and give it CPR.
Subterranean Deadbeats launch ‘Hang Me Out To Dry’ b/w ‘As Above, So Below’ on 1 August at George Lane, St Kilda, Melbourne.
The 7” vinyl will be available at the show and at all good record stores, including Greville Street Records, Prahran.
‘Hang Me Out To Dry’ b/w ‘As Above, So Below’ is available on Bandcamp along with the rest of the Deadbeat’s EP, Spewing Voodoo.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
