Hip hop icon and revolutionary Genesis Owusu is bringing his electrifying stage presence and seamless blend of funk, rap and soul to Melbourne as he closes out Smirnoff Future Fresh with a special one night only gig at 170 Russell on Friday 23 August, supported by two handpicked local emerging artists.
Smirnoff Future Fresh brings together three of Australia’s most celebrated artists – Genesis Owusu, Young Franco and Mallrat – with a mission to discover the next generation of Aussie talent. Following Young Franco’s raging gig in Sydney in April and Mallrat’s sold out performance in Brisbane in June, Smirnoff Future Fresh is ready to turn up the heat in the cultural capital of Australia – Melbourne – with Genesis Owusu.
Seamlessly blending classic punk rock, alternative R&B and utopian future funk, Genesis Owusu offers listeners an ever-evolving listening experience that keeps them second-guessing at every moment. Few artists have swept the Australian awards calendar quite like Owusu; he’s a two time ARIA Album of the Year recipient, was awarded the Australian Music Prize in 2021, is a three-time J Award winner, and has been awarded a slew of AIR Awards. In addition to earning a spot on President Obama’s 2021 playlist, he’s also toured the United States supporting Paramore and Bloc Party – including performing dates at Madison Square Garden.

Following a national search, two emerging artists – SUPEREGO and Pink Matter – have been handpicked by Genesis to support him at his Smirnoff Future Fresh gig. One of the most unique, genre-pushing collectives in Australia, SUPEREGO are an eclectic mishmash of producers, rappers, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists who simultaneously channel golden-era hip-hop, Nujabes-esque beats and experimental Soundcloud rappers/producers of the past decade. Pink Matter are redefining what it is to be an all-female band, crafting a unique intersection between neo-soul, jazz and dance genres. Having performed at Laneway Festival and Splendour in the Grass, the three-piece have quickly developed a devoted following in their hometown of Brisbane and beyond.
In addition to winning a Future Fresh support slot, SUPEREGO and Pink Matter will partake in a mentorship workshop with industry professionals including Secret Sounds CEO Paul Piticco and promoter Sam Shaw, as well as receive a performance fee for their Future Fresh gig, plus advertising support.
Smirnoff Marketing Manager Maddy Stockwell says, “We’re so excited to have the incredible Genesis Owusu on board to close out Smirnoff Future Fresh this August. Over the past few months, Smirnoff Future Fresh has provided a platform for six rising Aussie acts to perform alongside some of the industry’s biggest names, along with receiving guidance from industry experts to help them thrive in the dynamic Australian music scene. Smirnoff Future Fresh underpins Smirnoff’s unwavering support for Australia’s music scene, by championing local Aussie artists.”

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
