Eora/Sydney-based indie shining star Milku returns with his newest single and music video, “Fall In Love Again” out independently, today.

“Fall In Love Again” arrives in succession of Milku’s debut EP, You Make Me Feel Beautiful – released last year. An art-pop compendium which traversed a spectrum of emotion bursts, Milku spun between playfully bright arrangements, sharply witted lyricism and addictive melodies to blow apart the crossroads of embittered anxieties and magical highs. Now, having found the truth, today’s single looks to what the answers might mean, and how to bring them back together.

A perky and simultaneously sad current of 2000s fuelled nostalgia underpins “Fall In Love Again”. Milku looks back to look forward, in hopes of experiencing one of life’s greatest joys: falling in love, and desiring to fall in love. The accompaniment is a happy and hopeful pastiche of sunny synths, woozy guitars and the bright backing of drum machines.

On the new single, Milku shares, “Fall In Love Again is about that thing that everyone wants to do, all the time: fall in love again. With your person, with a new person, whoever. It’s why people buy red cars and build cathedrals and go thrift shopping for cute little outfits; we want people to look at us and then we want to fall in love with them. There’s part of me that wants to fall in love with every new person I meet — this song is also about trying to square that with keeping something real going.”

Milku adds on today’s music video: “The music video is about the idea that you will become your parents one day. It’s fucking scary but true. So we cast my dad in it and my best friend and her mum, and have these shots where we morph into our parents with no warning or explanation. I am actually horrified by this idea as I think it is the central horror of life (i.e. death) but what came out was also really wholesome and comforting. It seems a lot easier when you have someone to face it with.”

After taking the stage at Splendour in the Grass 2022, a series of singles taken from You Make Me Feel Beautiful earned Milku the title of triple j Unearthed’s Feature Artist, with adoration from Purple Sneakers and Music Feeds, alongside additions from triple j, community radio and triple j Unearthed. Next, Milku took the record on a national tour that brought his electrifying live sets to stages across the country performing new material backed by his live band.

When Milku was newly a teenager, riding around in the backseat of his parents’ car, he’d ask them to play a tape he’d made labelled “Techno Mix”. It was his self-made compilation of the DFA scene of the early ’00s, and he’d demand that his dad turn up the volume until they could barely take it. Milku was a quiet kid, learning to play acoustic guitar alone in his bedroom – but between those booming beats and bent sequences, Milku was discovering a language of unadulterated self-expression. Milku’s compulsive debut, You Make Me Feel Beautiful, turns the same trick – it brightens up the dark just enough to make you too feel seen.

From his teen years in Darwin to his current base of Sydney as touring guitarist for Middle Kids, the sound of Milku was slowly born. A love letter from a bedroom art-pop artist at heart to the synthesisers, autotune and the New York indie bands of the early 00s, Milku is bold, bombastic, and anchored by connected emotion. Evolving into the vibrant project it is today, Milku’s playful sonic profile is riddled with juxtaposition at every turn, as he carves a space for fun in navigating life’s feelings, doubts and love.
