The Devil Wears Prada

.

Jeremy: What’s up brother how are you?

Tristan: I’m going great man how you going?
Jeremy: I’m awesome. Just home for a couple days so I’m trying to soak it up.

Tristan: Yeah sweet. When are you guys flying out for your tours?
Jeremy: I think we get there on the 29th or something like that. So yeah, we’ve got like a couple of months, but we’re going to go in a couple of days. We rented an Airbnb on the lake that we’re going to go make some music at. Staying busy.

Tristan: Sweet. I know that the last time the The Devil Wears Prada was here was back in 2018, wasn’t it?
Jeremy: Yeah, it’s been a long time.

Tristan: Is there anything you’re looking forward to most about coming back here?
Jeremy: Yeah, just playing a bunch of new songs. We’ve made like so many records, it feels like since then, that we just haven’t been able to play at all. And so just really looking forward to playing new stuff there.

Tristan: Yeah, it’s going to be great. I mean, I obviously can’t wait because I’m a huge fan of you guys as well.
Jeremy: Thank you.

Tristan: How does it feel to be able to support artists like Alpha Wolf and alongside them Invent Animate and Thrown as well
Jeremy: It’s awesome. I like the Alpha Wolf guys. We’ve hung out with them a few times and they’re really dope and I respect what they’re doing and they’re a badass band. I like the Invent Animate guys. They’re super sick too and I’ve never met Thrown but everyone I know who has said they’re really nice guys too. So it’s awesome.

.

.

Tristan: That’s great to hear. I want to talk about the new single too. I know a lot of people that are watching/reading this will know that you guys have dropped a revamped version of Reasons with Lolo. How would you say the reception has been so far with the fans?
Jeremy: It’s actually been amazing. It’s really cool. I think when we first put out like the original version of the song with Excision and Wooli, I was like, I don’t know how people are going to react. Cause you know, it’s like a dubstep song and we’re just kind of on the song, but it went over really well. And so we wanted to play the song live. And so we kind of just like figured out a way to like play it as a band. So we’re not just like hit and play like on the iPod and going. And it’s just been one of the coolest parts of the set. So when we went to go back and retrack it, we thought it’d be fun to have somebody like feature on it and we’d been hearing a lot about Lolo and we’re like, I don’t even know if she’d be interested in something that’s like metal adjacent, but we hit her up and she was, and she killed it. And she’s awesome. We just met her at this festival in Dallas and she was sick. She was awesome. So, but the reception is awesome. It’s, it’s our highest streaming song every day right now. So that’s, that’s crazy and awesome.

Tristan: Yeah. It’s wild. And like, I know that you sound has changed a lot over the years too. And it’s good to see you guys are still somewhat sticking to your roots, while also experimenting. How would you say it’s balancing? Obviously you like collaborating. Is there any like other artists you want to try and collab with over the future? Any sort of genres you’re trying to mix into?
Jeremy: Yeah, I think, you know, from the onset that’s just kind of been our mantra is like just constantly trying to change things up. We kind of started as this hodgepodge hybrid of like metal core and sense and kind of emo singing and all these different, like there’s like death metal parts and stuff. So it’s always just been something that’s interesting to us. It’s like what sounds fresh and new. We’ve actually just been doing a ton of songwriting in just like sessions out in LA with people who don’t really work in metal very much just because it’s kind of fun to do that. On our last record, we wrote a song with Bobby from Fit for a King. He’s just a super sick dude. So we’ve actually written a couple of things with him and some other people in the genre too. And we’re just, we’re just trying everything. We’re just having a mentality that like, there is no bad ideas. There’s just maybe the right and wrong ideas. And so kind of just trying to see, you know, what can we do to keep pushing the genre forward? Because so many of our peers seem to be doing that right now too.

Tristan: Yeah. Cause all the metalcore scene or just the metal scene and genre is always changing.
Jeremy: Sure

.

.

Tristan: With different bands constantly experimenting and revamping everything. Like it’s amazing to see so many other bands are trying to delve into different genres. You’ve got like Sleep Token, for example, that are completely going for it.
You guys have been around since 2005 and are still killing it in the scene, which is mental to me. What’s your process for writing new music and with the new band members as well over the years, has it stayed the same? Have you guys switched things up?
Jeremy: I feel like it’s been different kind of every, with every record that we’ve written. Like, we started kind of just jamming stuff together in a room. And then a couple of us would just go to our laptops and write some songs and bring them in and teach people. We’ve made records with producers that were really heavy handed and some that were lighter handed. You know, we’ve done concept EPs. We’ve, but I think the biggest thing was just the pandemic happening and just changing the way we kind of operated and going back to the drawing board on like, you know, like what are the most important parts of a song and usually that’s the lyrics and what the song says. And so that’s kind of our main mentality nowadays. Like if the song sounds really good, like on a piano, singing the lyrics and they resonate, then anything else you put on it is going to make it cooler too. So just really trying to figure out the fundamentals of like what makes a good song and what tickles your ear, I guess. If it don’t tickle your ear, there’s no point in making it, I guess.

Tristan: Are there any bands or stuff that have influenced your music over the years?
Jeremy: God, yeah, there’s so many. I think a lot, obviously a lot of other metalcore and hardcore and things like that. I think a lot of like world music and different stuff like that, there’s a lot of electronic influence and stuff, but I think a lot of times what helps is just listening to our peers when they come out with something new, mostly just because it kind of puts to me at least a lot of things off the table. Like if somebody does something, I’m like, well, we can’t do that. We have to pivot and do something else because like that’s their thing. And that usually makes you creative to try and like do something different than what everybody else is doing. So I’m always kind of listening to I’m a fan first. So I’m always just listening to what other people are doing and thinking. Saying how can we do something crazy and unique?

Tristan: Yeah, exactly. No, it’s always great to hear as well. I’ve got another solid question as well. Are there any, or you or any other members that have had any memorable fan interactions or like good or bad that have stuck with you over the years?
Jeremy: Brother, where do I start? Yeah. I think I would say 99% of people are really cool and really nice. It’s kind of cool nowadays just because I hang out in the hardcore space a lot. I have found myself there just through a myriad of reasons. And a lot of people that play music in that space kind of came up listening to Prada before they moved into more hardcore type of stuff. So that’s always cool when it’s like you’re a fan of a band and then they’re like, yo, I used to listen to you growing up. And it’s like, dang, that’s sick. Weird stuff? All the time, man. I had a guy recently ask if I would draw the triangle logo like on his chin right here. And then he went and got it tattooed. That’s kind of crazy.

.

.

Tristan: So he actually got it tattooed.
Jeremy: Yeah. Or I’ll have people just like, if I’m at a bar after a show, I’ve had a couple people be like super rude and just like say like crazy aggressive stuff to me. And I’m like, all right, man. You’re weird.

Tristan: “I’m just here making music.”
Jeremy: Haha.  Just leave me alone brother. But I don’t know. There’s always some crazy stuff going on.

Tristan: Also,  about the band, I know that Mike has side projects. Like is it Hacksaw Hockey? Is there anything you’re working on, on the side as well? Or are you just mainly prioritizing the band at the moment?
Jeremy: I I’ve run the business of the band, so that’s pretty consuming. For me, I had cooked up like a side project with somebody else and we were working pretty heavily on it and it sounded really cool. But that was about the time we made our last album Color Decay and a lot of it sounded like what we were trying to turn The Devil Wears Prada into at the time. And so I kind of abandoned that and I was like, I think I should probably just focus on putting those sounds. So I don’t know. My girlfriend plays music too. And so we’ve talked about doing a project together. I think that would be fun, but we’re so busy. I don’t know when we would like we have, I’m in our studio in our house right now. We like never use it because whenever we go home, we just like watch TV.

Tristan: What are you watching at the moment? Is there anything, any shows particular?
Jeremy: She had never seen the Jinx and there’s a new season of that that came out. So we just watched on the first season. I watched that Baby Reindeer. Wild. It was crazy.

Tristan: I don’t know how I felt about that. Just watching the entire thing. It was just, I don’t know, maybe it was some type of way watching it. I was like, damn, this actually happened.
Jeremy: Yeah, that was, that was crazy. I watched most of the NBA playoffs. We watch everything. We’ve run out of TV at this point. We’ve seen like literally everything. So we’re, we’re just like waiting for new stuff to come out pretty much.

.

.

Tristan: Cause we’re running short on time. I’ve just got a few more questions as well. So I told my mate that I was talking to you and he’s a massive fan too. He was adamant that I asked you this. He like said, you are going to ask him this. All right. All right. Would you guys consider playing? “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?”
Jeremy: Yeah, we just played it in Alaska like, yesterday. So would you mean in Australia?

Tristan: Yeah. Yeah. In Australia or like any other old material like that, or can we expect, don’t have to spoil it, but can we expect any old material?
Jeremy: There are some throwbacks going on there. Yeah.

Tristan: Yeah. Sweet. Okay. Well, can to hear it? Like I can’t wait. I’ve got a few rapid fires as well, like five rapid fires, just to sort of smash out the rest of it.
Jeremy: Sure

Tristan: First thing that comes to mind, no hesitation. First one, favorite song to perform live?
Jeremy: Salt.

Tristan: Oh yeah. Favorite album of all time?
Jeremy: By any band?

Tristan: Any band.
Jeremy: Violator by Depeche Mode.

Tristan: Your biggest pet peeve?
Jeremy: Close talkers when they talk real close to you.

Tristan: Yeah. Just like right in your face. This is sort of like what we’re talking about before.  What’s a song that you wish you had written?
Jeremy: Oh my God. Like eight songs that Bring Me To The Horizon that has written in the last couple of years. They’re good, man. They got some good stuff.

Tristan: Yeah. So good. Final one as well. Describe your music in one word.
Jeremy: Constantly evolving with a hyphen in between.

Tristan: It was brilliant. Well, thank you so much for that. I’ll be going to the Melbourne show at The Forum.
Jeremy: Yeah. I’m pumped. That’s like my favorite city in Australia. So I’m excited.

Tristan: Well, thank you so much for your time. I appreciate you taking the time.
Jeremy: Yeah, no worries. Thanks for having me, man. And we’ll see you in like a month and a half.

Tristan: No, yeah, it’s getting close. Yeah. Bring extra jumpers by the way. It’s going to be very cold.
Jeremy: Cold for y ‘all is not that bad. Hahaha.

Tristan: I swear that our 10 degrees here feels about 10 less. It’s like piercing, but yeah.
Jeremy: Sick.

Tristan: See you soon.
Jeremy: Bye
