In a recent interview with Par Sundström of the Swedish heavy metal giants Sabaton, Amnplify’s Dave Bruce dove deep into the band’s incredible journey, innovation in the industry, and their upcoming cinematic release, The Tour to End All Tours. Known for their unique brand of history-driven metal and groundbreaking projects, Sabaton continues to push the boundaries, both musically and in business.

Reflecting on 25 Years of Sabaton

Par Sundström, Sabaton’s bassist and co-founder, shared insights into the band’s formation and evolution over the past 25 years. What began as a group of friends casually starting a band has now become a global sensation, with sold-out arenas and headline slots at major festivals. Reflecting on their journey, Sundström explained:

“It’s been great and shit, but all in all, I’m super happy about everything that has happened to us overall.”

One of the most impressive aspects of Sabaton’s success is their ability to stay true to their sound and vision. Sabaton’s blend of traditional heavy metal, rich with epic choirs and the powerful voice of lead singer Joakim Brodén, remains their signature. Unlike many bands, they’ve resisted the temptation to follow trends. As Sundström noted,

“We were out of fashion when we started, and we’re still out of fashion. But we do our own sound.”

A Business Model Like No Other

What truly sets Sabaton apart is not just their music but their business approach. While many bands sign away rights or rely on external management, Sabaton has taken a fiercely independent path. The band runs its own magazine, Sabaton Open Air Festival (Sweden’s second-largest rock festival), and even a Sabaton Cruise, which is among the longest-running music cruises of its kind. As Sundström shared:

“We do things differently, and that has led us to a lot of variations of things in life.”

He and Brodén are hands-on with everything, from managing their mail-order warehouse to overseeing distribution for their latest cinematic release. Their independence allows them to make creative decisions and maintain complete control over their music and brand.

The Upcoming Tour Movie: A Cinematic Experience

Sabaton’s latest venture is their movie The Tour to End All Tours, a live concert film recorded during their recent European tour. Sabaton’s decision to handle the movie’s distribution independently is no surprise given their track record. With 750 cinemas already signed on—and more to come—this tour film promises to be an immersive experience for fans who couldn’t attend in person. Sundström expressed pride in the project, saying:

“We built a pretty damn cool tour, and we wanted to share it with people who couldn’t attend.”

The movie features the full concert experience, capturing Sabaton at their finest, and the band’s unique blend of storytelling and stage production is sure to leave an impression.

On Music, History, and the Future

For those unfamiliar with Sabaton’s thematic focus, the band draws inspiration from historical events, particularly military history. Their albums often tell the stories of wars, battles, and heroes from the past, offering a powerful and educational take on metal music. Their two most recent albums, The Great War and The War to End All Wars, focus on World War I.

While Sundström didn’t reveal specific details about upcoming music, he assured fans that new material is in the works. When asked about their sound evolving over the years, he proudly stated:

“We’ve perfected production-wise, but we still sound the same.”

Final Thoughts

Sabaton’s journey is not just about the music—it’s about the innovation, independence, and relentless passion for their craft. As they continue to grow, evolve, and create, their fans can expect nothing short of excellence. Whether through their music, festivals, or cinematic releases, Sabaton has carved a legacy that is as unique as it is powerful.

Stay tuned for more updates on The Tour to End All Tours and Sabaton’s next big moves!
