Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the song writing bug? Briefly describe your journey to date.
I actually wanted to be a mechanic when I was younger because my dad was always working on/with cars, which is funny because I know nothing about cars now and ring him when something goes wrong with mine. I caught the music bug around 14 and started writing music at around 15; all of that music was heavy guitar music as I was listening to Bring Me The Horizon and Slipknot and those kinds of bands. I played and wrote in a couple of metal bands before starting this project – I found myself listening to less heavy music and getting more into the likes of Prince, INXS and The 1975; their approach to guitar in pop music tickled a part of my brain and I got more into the production side of pop music and now I’m here.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I would describe my sound as eclectic, i draw influences from every style I listen to and don’t like to stick to one genre. I guess it would lean more towards hyperpop in that sense? I’m not sure if that answers that question haha.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I was super inspired after seeing The 1975 live, their lights show and stage production was insane. The Cure were also really inspiring to see, they played for 4 hours without a break and sounded incredible live. Notable mention for Princes superbowl halftime show, the story behind it all makes it even cooler.

Your latest single ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ has just been released! Describe its origin and  evolution.
The song was actually written in it’s original form about 4 or 5 years ago; there were about 3 versions of it including the one that ended up being released. The original version was alot faster and in a higher key which was a bit hard for me to sing comfortably – but I lost the session files for it when I had something go wrong with a hard drive; I ended up digging through some Cubase sessions one day looking for any cool ideas that might pop up hoping I’d made something cool and just shelved it and found the bell lead synth and created the whole skeleton of the instrumental in a few hours. From memory I just had it on loop and sang the lyrics from the original Heartbreak Hotel over it and liked how it made me feel, I think it just fit the mood of the song way better than the original so i recorded the rest of the song over it. I guess in a sense it’s a bit of a frankenstein song but I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Is there an EP or ALBUM on the drawing board?
I don’t officially have an EP or an Album on the drawing board but I’m always writing songs so it’s not off the cards. I am thinking of Heartbreak Hotel as an ‘era’ or sorts so I guess this is a collection of works in the same way but nothing official.

What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the  fans expect?
I don’t have anything booked yet but I am in the process of getting ready to perform live, I’m just figuring out the logistics of performing the songs live and will be looking at performing in Adelaide and interstate soon. I’m looking forward to experiencing how the songs translate live. In the meantime the fans can expect more new songs coming out and when I have the live stuff ironed out they can expect a high energy show that hopefully delivers a good time for them.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And  why?
I’ve always loved watching those boiler room sets and thought performing one of those would be fun; I’d love to perform one of those with Umru, I’ve always been a fan of his production style. In the same vein Sophie would have been amazing to perform with. But if I had to whittle it down to 2 I’d say Alive: Fred Again and Dead: Michael Hutchence.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing  towards them?
My long term aspirations as a music artist is just to be able to do it for as long as possible. Im just working on my craft and trying to learn as much as possible to become the best songwriter and musician as I can.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
It sounds cliche but I’d say just create as much as you can as often as you can. Not everything you make will be good but think about it as learning. Every bad piece of art you create is just removing a piece of a block in the way of a good piece of art.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career  highlight so far?
Being pretty fresh into the new iteration of the project I am yet to perform live but from the few shows I’ve played under the lightsonlover name I think the best thing about performing to a live audience is just seeing people dancing or singing along to your song.

Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Me and my friends used to do WWE moves on each other as a kid and I got chokeslammed off of his roof into his pool and only just made it into the water by a couple of inches. There’s definitely a reason they say not to try it at home.
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Tie between music and weird conspiracy rabbit holes
What is the thing you like most about yourself? Maybe that I can learn things pretty quickly? It’s proven to be useful sometimes

Finally, just a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – Purple Rain
Artist – Subject to change weekly, at the moment it would be Chappell Roan
Movie – The Simpsons Movie
Place to visit – Newtown
Venue to play – Blacktown Masonic Hall (rip)
Food – Fruit
Drink – Coconut water or freshly squeezed juice
Person in History – My Grandma
