Tasmania is producing some of the most interesting artists around at the moment and straying away from the mundane is rock group She Walks Through Dusk. The band has released a soaring epic single called “Ghosts” that will stay with you and linger like an apparition.
She Walks Through Dusk has flexed its creative strengths with keyboardist Amelia Kohl and singer Imogen Duske writing a song that tells the moody story of a young woman being visited by the ghost of her dead lover. The result is a cinematic blend of symphonic metal, weaving together the grandeur of orchestral arrangements with the intensity of metal. “Ghosts” is a powerful collision of heavy, chugging guitars and thunderous drums with sweeping operatic vocals and gothic tones. Think of Wuthering Heights but with an epic movie score that bleeds with a darker, heavier edge.

The production is slick, although it’s no surprise given that the track was recorded at Abatis Studios, England and produced by Mike Exeter (Black Sabbath). The song starts with Imogen’s vocals and through the course of “Ghosts” the tension is slowly built up, and the production becomes more embellished. Imogen gives a dynamic performance, carrying the song’s emotional weight before the song ignites into a grittier third act that bristles with raw power. It’s beautifully written but its grandiose lyrics tread lightly between profound and over-the-top. However, given their influences of Nightwish and love of symphonic metal, you’d expect nothing less than lush cinematic soundscapes.
Where “Ghosts” excels is its ambition. The chorus makes you feel like a bird in flight and there is an undeniable allure in its mighty scope. For new listeners they are likely to be swept away into a wild turbulent world of metal rock.
If you have dipped into this world, let She Walks Through Dusk be your guide, you won’t go wrong, especially with “Ghosts” which aims to capture your attention as well as your soul.
