CANISHA in the press:

Soulful sensation Canisha recently unveiled her highly anticipated single Nowhere, taking her music to new heights. Known for her captivating lyrics and heartfelt sound, this up-and-coming First Nations artist forges a deep connection with her audience through her music. What sets Canisha apart in the music industry is her unique combination of soulful vocals, powerful songwriting, and unfiltered vulnerability. Nowhere serves as a testament to her artistic growth and further solidifies her position as an artist to watch. BEAT MAGAZINE, MELBOURNE

Trawlwoolway and Wiradjuri artist Canisha is a soulful singer with an edge. Last year, she performed alongside the likes of Kobie Dee, Briggs and Chasing Ghost. You might’ve seen her at St Kilda Music Festival or Treaty Day Out this year. Her debut EP is called ‘Don’t Be Scared’ and proves Canisha is not afraid to be lyrically vulnerable…. Or to lean into a sincere love of pop music. INTERVIEW – ABC RADIO NATIONAL (audio)

Unafraid to lean into her love for pop music, from song construction to delivery, Canisha’s debut record is a confident and lush display. It is music that is textured and rich in arrangement, while Canisha’s vocals are inviting and warm. Sosefina Fuamoli – BEAT MAGAZINE, MELBOURNE

Following the release of her debut EP earlier this year, soulful songstress Canisha has released her powerful new single “Save You From Yourself” (October 23) via Bad Apples Music, with a hometown launch show on November 1 at the Persa Bandroom in Fitzroy.

Co-written as part of the Singing Our Futures program with Canisha’s mentor Bumpy, and featuring Bumpy on backing vocals, “Save You From Yourself” originally emerged as an acoustic song and was taken to new levels in the studio with producers Anthony Liddell and Jake Amy.

Speaking about the meaning of the song, Canisha said, “This track explores my fear for a loved one who is struggling with their mental health and turning to alcohol. It’s my most vulnerable track to date and I still cry sometimes when I perform it.”

Based in Melbourne/Naarm, Canisha is a soul singer with an edge, a lyricist whose emotive and playful music captivates and draws you in. A First Nations artist with an enchanting exploration of emotion in her music, Canisha’s debut EP ‘Don’t Be Scared’ showcased her confident and lush pop sound, her textured and rich music infused with inviting and warm vocals.

Canisha has performed at festivals like Yirramboi Festival, St. Kilda Music Festival, Share The Spirit at Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Treaty Day Out. Inspired by artists like Adele and Harry Styles, Canisha has grown in confidence and purpose, using music to overcome social anxiety and connect with audiences. Her music blends pop sensibilities with soul flavour marked by raw lyricism and storytelling.

The Singing Our Futures program was established by the Archie Roach Foundation in collaboration with Culture is Life. It has evolved from the rich legacy left behind by Uncle Archie Roach, a legacy centred around the art of storytelling and truth-telling through music, as well as his dedication to nurturing and creating significant opportunities for emerging First Nations artists.  This program delivers invaluable support to its mentees as they follow their pathway into songwriting and recording, also facilitating opportunities for them to showcase their talents through partnerships with well-known events. Over the past two years it has evolved into an autonomous mentoring initiative, persistently growing by recognising the fundamental needs for First Nations artists.

The program has been under the leadership of Candice Lorrae (of The Merindas), an accomplished singer/songwriter and music producer with Jawoyn and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Singing Our Futures has seen emerging artists receive mentorship from some of the country’s most prominent artists, including Emily Wurramurra, Dan Sultan, Emma Donovan, Dobby, and Bumpy.
