How did the band come together? Where did it all begin?
Haast Hunter began several years ago. It started off as a fun project between myself (James Harper – Vocals/ Guitar) and our original drummer. We meet each other through a local classified add here where we reside in Hamilton, New Zealand. It wasn’t till May of 2023 that I made the decision to start putting our work out into the world!

Briefly describe your journey to date.
It’s been fairly high pace. Especially for 2024. Our original drummer decided to leave for greener pastures in Brisbane. So Chris (Bass) and I quickly got on the DMs to find ourselves a drummer that was the right fit. We knew Mitch Through the scene and mutual friends. We already knew he would be the right fit. We through him in the deep end straight away tracking 4 singles (literally a few days after him saying yes to helping out). He added such a unique dimension to the tracks. We knew on the spot we wanted him as a permanent member of Haast Hunter. 

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
Our sound is still evolving. I think what is unique or special about Haast Hunter is that our fans can appreciate that they are in on the ground floor, and that they can already hear progression through our current body of work. I think a part of what keeps them engaged is the mystery surrounding where we are headed as a band with our sound and development.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Seeing Sleep Token and Bring Me the Horizon earlier this year in Melbourne was one of those “Oh so this is how its done” moments. If anything it inspired me to really embrace the “no rules” approach to music. To not worry about fitting into a certain groove or genre and just be us.

Your latest single ‘Trial Unknown’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution. 
I wrote this at the start of the year. Its about exploring the journey of liberation from the emotional turmoil caused by a person exhibiting narcissistic traits. Delving into the struggle of recognising toxic behaviours and the impact they have on one’s mental health, the lyrics unfold to reveal a strong message of self-empowerment, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries and prioritising one’s mental well-being.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
“Trial unknown” is set to be the first single off our forthcoming album (Due mid 2025). We currently have six completed tracks for the album and another four or five in the works!

What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We are currently in the middle of a New Zealand tour. We would love to make the move to Australia for some dates next year!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why? 
Any of the previously mentioned artists. Any from “A Perfect Circle” to “Queens of the stone” and everything in between. “Linkin Park” would be amazing! Its hard to narrow down to any one artist as we draw inspiration from so many! “Bad Omens” “Deftones” the list goes on…

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
Creating a body of work that we all love and are proud of. To write music that WE want to listen to. With our sights firmly set on our debut album and future tour dates, we are more than excited about what the future may bring! Just taking it day by day, getting that little better with our craft step by step, we inch our way that little bit closer to reaching our goals of being that best band we can be.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out? 
Define your goals and mission statement from the start. What do you want? To just write good music or take over the world? Once you decide on what you want, create specific measurable goals that you can tick off to ensure you are making the right steps.

Here are three personal questions your fans will find interesting about you: 

1. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? I cant answer this without getting into trouble.

2. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Apart from music. Anything fight spot related.

3. What is the thing you like most about yourself? My relentless work ethic. Thats something I would like to be remembered by when I am gone.
