Australian alt-dance collective Haiku Hands (Claire Nakazawa, Beatrice Lewis and Mie Nakazawa) today reveal a new remix of their energetic track “Ma Ruler”, with acclaimed Grammy-nominated and Mercury Award-winning writers / producers Bad Sounds adding their magic touch to the song.
Bad Sounds on “Ma Ruler”: “Haiku Hands are cool af and Ma Ruler is a cool af song. The lyrics are wicked and the delivery is so killer. We knew before we even started that there was no way to do a traditional dance floor aimed remix for it. It would just be a way less cool version of the original (and honestly that’s not really our style anyway). The only way we could imagine to remix the song was to completely turn it on its head, and re-contextualise the whole thing. We referenced a lot of classic Bad Sounds influences like early Neptunes and Gorillaz, and it turns out that those things combined with Haiku Hands is maaaaaaagic. Such a privilege to get under the hood on this track! Thank you Haiku Hands for trusting us!”

“Ma Ruler” (Bad Sounds Remix) is the second offering from the deluxe edition of Haiku Hands’ sophomore album Pleasure Beast, which is set to arrive 22 November 2024 via Spinning Top Records and features 5 new bonus tracks, including initial single “Kicks”. Haiku Hands will celebrate the Deluxe release by bringing their invigorating and electrifying live performance to headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane throughout December 2024.
An electro-pop-rap manifesto, Pleasure Beast, which dropped in December 2023, is fast approaching its one-year anniversary. The exuberant album was nominated for an AIR award for Best Independent Electronic/Dance Album of 2024 and was described “as smart as it is fun… iconoclastic and unskippable”. The record followed the breakout success of “Not About You” and Haiku Hands’ 2020 self-titled, AIR-Award nominated debut, which received the stamp of approval from the likes of NME, Rolling Stone, DIY, Paste and British Vogue, who described the trio’s unique sound and chaotic live show as part Scissor Sisters, Azealia Banks, Björk and Warhol.

Pleasure Beast is a sonic exploration of Haiku Hands’ minds, life experiences, energies and beast modes – sometimes there is joy, and sometimes there is mayhem. A dynamic and assertive artistic statement that embraces the sonic and visual edges of The Knife and the punk ethos of Le Tigre, Pleasure Beast is the incarnation of simple creatures with simple pleasures seeking peace in a world that wants to separate and divide. It’s the sound of umami at a rave. It’s taking to a sweaty and harmonious festival dancefloor as a public service. The political act of writing and performing in the first place. It’s the forbidden bitter fruit that dares you to be human. A grab-bag of sonic textures and lyrical bite fighting against capitalist vampires and numbing algorithmic vibes, desiring a decent society and sexy bread, and dancing the night away under a glowstick sun. And now the album is made even more indulgent, and enticing, with Pleasure Beast Deluxe dropping November 2024.
Known far and wide for their sweaty and spirited live sets, Haiku Hands have toured across Australia, Europe, the UK and US. They’ve won the hearts of festival crowds at the likes of Sydney World Pride, Wide Awake, Splendour in the Grass and 2023’s Governor’s Ball in NYC, among others. The lively trio will join San Cisco for a string of dates on their national album tour throughout October/November, before performing alongside The Presets at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens on Friday 15 November. Claire, Bea and Mie will then be joined by touring members, including Mataya Young and Mimi Bui to bring their wild choreography and electronic sounds to their own headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisb ane on the Club Deluxe Pleasure Beast Tour throughout December 2024, with a second Sydney date added due to popular demand. My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
