On a seemingly ordinary Tuesday night, Melbourne’s 170 Russell was anything but quiet as Japanese metalcore band Hanabie. tore up the stage for a sold-out crowd. Supported by local favorites The Gloom in the Corner, this high-energy show was more than a concert; it was a masterclass in musical fusion, crowd engagement, and the universal language of live music.
As The Gloom in the Corner opened the night, the room was already packed and buzzing with excitement. Known for their dark, theatrical style, the Melbourne-based band drew the crowd into their world from the first riff, with narrative-rich songs and a cinematic edge that added intensity to the evening. Their performance laid the perfect foundation for what was to come, leaving the crowd energized and fully immersed. Fans lined up around the merch table as soon as their set ended, eager to grab a keepsake, underscoring the local band’s impact.
When Hanabie. finally took the stage, the anticipation in the room reached a boiling point. Despite the language barrier, the band’s energy and charisma connected immediately with the audience. Hanabie’s blend of fierce metalcore with playful J-pop elements offered a refreshing take on the genre that hit with an intensity that Melbourne’s metalheads fully embraced. Lead vocalist Yukina commanded attention, seamlessly shifting between guttural screams and melodic, almost pop-inspired lines, bringing a balance of aggression and charm that kept the audience hooked. The rest of the band, equally dynamic, gave the performance a raw, high-powered energy that never let up.
Perhaps most memorable was the band’s effort to connect with the crowd through local references. Though their English was limited, Hanabie managed to work in a few Aussie expressions, rallying the crowd with familiar chants that had everyone laughing and cheering along. It was a charming and clever move, showing the band’s genuine appreciation for their fans and breaking down any cultural barriers with humor and a bit of Aussie spirit.
The energy in the room was palpable as the crowd embraced every song. Fans crowd-surfed in waves, fists punched the air, and the collective enthusiasm was contagious. By the time Hanabie announced their last song, the entire room was a sea of voices calling for more. They obliged with an encore that included two additional tracks, each greeted with fresh cheers and a burst of renewed energy from the fans, sending the night into a final, exhilarating crescendo.
170 Russell’s legendary sound system was also a star of the night, capturing every layer of Hanabie’s complex sound with perfect clarity. Known for its high-quality acoustics, the venue allowed every riff, beat, and vocal to shine, making for an immersive experience. Whether you were up front or further back, you could feel the power of the music reverberate through the space, elevating Hanabie’s unique sound in a way that few venues can match.
As the lights finally came up, the crowd was buzzing with post-show adrenaline, many lining up for merch or swapping stories of favorite moments from the set. Hanabie’s Melbourne debut at 170 Russell was not just a standout performance; it was a memorable celebration of cross-cultural connection, the thrill of live metal, and the spirit of a dedicated fanbase. For those who were lucky enough to witness it, Hanabie’s show was a night to remember and a powerful testament to the band’s place in Australia’s heavy music scene. With their infectious energy, genre-blending brilliance, and genuine effort to connect with their fans, Hanabie left an indelible mark on Melbourne’s music landscape.
