Interview with Dave Bruce
.
.
Have you always wanted to be a musician?
Yes, from an early age I have been obsessed with music! I could always get myself lost in a song!
When did you get the song writing bug?
Probably at school around age 15/16 when I started to learn guitar and get into bands like Oasis, Radiohead, Blur etc
How would you describe your sound?
Alternative indie rock! Tinged with Americana, some folk and Alt Country
Why do you think people resonate with your music?
We tend to approach some pretty universal themes! Getting stuck in life (Treading Water) learning from change and crisis (All Changed, Marie Antoinette) finding hope in personal goals (Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams) and themes of personal, societal and global conflict and existential threat (Revolution; The Absolution, Blood Red Sky)
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I have seen Oasis at the Big Day out which was amazing! The Killers in New York, Coldplay at Wembley and Washington DC, Eric Clapton Madison Square Gardens were all amazing!
Your new single ‘Marie Antoinette’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Marie Antoinette addresses the theme of a relationship which is ‘almost’ there but not quite. You both have to go away and do some learning, and grow, evolve into the people you are meant to be! And i think it ends with a message of hope “don’t you know? Crisis can be good for you”
Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yes! New Horizons will be out on Dec 14. It is a 14 track album featuring the singles we have released to date and more unheard material!
Any tours or events coming up soon?
Yes live gigs in Sydney in the new year followed by an Aussie tour!
What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Really looking to playing the songs live! Fans can expect a very dynamic and energetic show!
.
.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Bernard Fanning! I have always been a huge Powderfinger fan!
What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
It is really to write, produce and release cool music and have people enjoy the songs! So yes, hopefully I keep building on those goals every day!
With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Only you get to define success! Learn and keep getting better at your craft, enjoy the journey and never give up! Work out your ‘why’ meaning/ purpose etc, then your goal (s) strengths and values, and the daily activities that take you there. Do 3-5 things every day to take you to your goal (s) #momentum!
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
The energy you get from the crowd and the shared magic of the musical experience!
What’s been the career highlight so far?
Playing at some of NY’s most iconic indie rock venues!
