Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be a musician?
Yep, 100%. There were brief period when I was maybe 11 and 13 respectively where I wanted to be a pro-wrestler and a skateboarder but they were always things I wanted to do as well as music. When did you get the song writing bug?
I remember trying to write songs with my friends in like year 2 and getting really annoyed at them because they weren’t taking and seriously and kept singing about butts or somethings. The first legit song I wrote was when I was about 11 or 12. It had like 7 verses and was all different stories about people who were deeply unsatisfied with their lives. I was a pretty dark and serious kid haha, it’s a stark contrast to the muppet of a man I grew into. How would you describe your sound?
It’s poppy-rock for weirdos. Strong focus on songwriting but I also like to make stuff that get you moving. Ideally when you hear it, you’ll be crying and dancing at the same time. Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think because of lack of artifice. I write what I mean and I mean what I write. I’ve always tried to write about the things that are sometimes to embarrassing or shameful to talk about. There’s a great joy and catharsis in hearing the things you thought only you think sung back to you and realising you’re not alone.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Oh there’s so many, so I’m just going to rattle off a list. Bruce Springsteen, Chappell Roan, Maggie Rogers, The Menzingers, Spanish Love Songs and Mallrat.Your new single RIPCORD has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I wrote Ripcord when I was involved in this program that involved me writing 100 songs in two months. Ripcord was one of them. The idea behind this was to break down the preciousness around songwriting and really hone your process. It really worked. Looking back now, I can connect Ripcord to things that were going on in my life. I was falling in love with my partner while secretly struggling with my mental health and addiction. The song was kind of a hypothetical look ahead at the life I wanted. Ripcord went through a lot of different forms. Through pre-production I feel like we stripped away everything that wasn’t 100% necessary and what we were left with was the purest form that song could be.Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Oh yeah, there’s an EP completely finished at ready to go.Any tours or events coming up soon?
Next show is the Ripcord single launch at last chance in Melbourne on Dec 14th.What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m looking forward to releasing more music soon and playing alot more music. Fans can expect a lot more music, shows and probably a bit more over-sharing.If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Oh, Bruce Springsteen for sure. His energy on stage is so incredible and I think it would be humbling to play with a dude in his 70s and struggle to keep up with him. What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I think I just want to continue to make authentic music that I’m proud of and stand by. I don’t really care about being famous or anything, but I would like to find the people out there who connect with my music. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Just make the music you want to make and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. Only you can make your music and there’s people out there who need to exactly what it is you make. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
The connection. I love sharing an experience like live music. The feeling that everybody is on exactly the same wavelength. What’s been the career highlight so far?
I played Big Day Out and did a small tour of South Korea with previous projects, they were both highlights of my career/life. In terms of this project, just releasing Ripcord and the accompanying music video. I’m very proud of that. Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Oh, my mispent youth means I have a fair ‘crazy’ stories. One time, a few years, I went quite literally crazy. Like, police and men in white coats came to take me away. I remember finding a guitar on the psych ward and strumming through an early vision of Ripcord. The whole place.. Now I don’t wanna say ‘went nuts’ but they certainly enjoyed the performance.
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Apart from music – Pro Wrestling. It’s such a beautiful and misunderstood art form. I think alot of people think it’s about violence but it’s actually about storytelling and characters. I also think it’s the profession that is the most similar to music. You have a small handful of people who ‘make it’ but the majority are just out here on the indie scene doing what they love and trying to make a go of it.
What is the thing you like most about yourself? I think my kindness and humor. I know that’s two things but I actually think they’re inseparable. I like to think my heart is always open to people and experiences and that I make people feel comfortable and at home around me.
