Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be an artist?
I never really thought about it to be honest, I just fell in love with the whole thing and it all just snowballed. When did you get the song writing bug?
Sometime around the age of sixteen or so, you’re always developing new ideas and practices, it’s such a fun thing to do & always interesting to listen back with fresh ears the next day & hear if what you created is terrible or not!Briefly describe your journey to date.
Musical childhood, guitar obsession, a million jam nights, great connections, festivals, gigs, travel, good times, bad times, weird times, new music & continuation of the never ending tour! How would you describe your sound?
Generally upbeat, quite fun, maybe a bit tongue in cheek, maybe a bit weird, hopefully groovy & danceable + a good time. At least that’s what I’m going for!Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I have no idea! But I do love to blend multiple styles, genres & sounds – maybe there’s a small part in there that everyone can get around & resonate with.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
One memory just came to mind. I recall watching a video of “Wolfmother” performing at some giant festival in Spain. They absolutely killed it, everyone was so connected, band, audience, event staff, everyone! You could just see how good of a time it was & how big the energy was there that day. That inspires me to create something like that sometime.Your latest single ‘Daydream’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s the first single & title track of my new album due in Feb 2025. I wrote it over the lockdown time about an internal conflict around procrastination – although it has many other meanings too! The music just came all at once jamming along then started mumbling some words & bam it all happened. Took it to the studio a couple years later, worked with top bloke Mark Lowrie @ Guffland Studios, spoke to my talented friend Nikota Kelly who created the fantastic artwork and here we are! Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yes my 14 track album “Daydream” is due out in Feb 2025! I can’t wait to share it with you. What are the signature tracks on the album, and which are your favorites to play live?
A couple stand out tracks for me would be, “Daydream”, “Violet Street” & “Sarsaparilla Spider”. Although I’m very happy with all of the tracks. I’ve performed a number of these new songs live solo but not at all with a band yet, so I’m very much looking forward to that. I think a few of the funnest tunes to play live with the band would be, “Do What You Do”, “Tell Me All That You Know” & “The Out Of Town Laundromat Blues”.What tours and events are coming up?
What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I have two more shows for 2024, Dec 22 @ The Bruthen Inn Hotel w/ Olivia Lay & Dec 31 NYE Party @ The Bundy Hall near sale w/ White Chocolate Diva Divine & Da Funk + Jungle Jim Smith. They’re both gonna be sweet as! In the new year I am continuing my never ending solo tour of the world, plenty of shows all over VIC at this stage. A few festival spots lined up, a few shows playing guitar in some other bands & then my run of gigs with my band to celebrate the release of “Daydream”. KEEN AS!If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Performing on stage with David Bowie would be incredible. You’d never know what you’d be getting into & what the show could consist of, it would be mental. Amazing performer, unique writer & total character. What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
Make music, make more music, & when I’m sick of making music, I’ll make some more! Lots of recording & touring but just trying to enjoy it all & do it all with great people. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Immerse yourself in your craft & the scene, work really hard & have fun. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
Sharing your music & stories, as well as the connection & buzz that is created between everyone when you’re enjoying yourselves & all moving to the same beat. It’s rather awesome. What’s been the career highlight so far?
Wow, tough question. My five trips to the USA have been amazing, I’ve had the honour & pleasure of meeting, working & performing with some incredible people over there – so I’d probably say that! Otherwise there’s been many great festivals here in AUS that have been very fulfilling including some touring opportunities. My most recent career highlight has to be recording & performing with Aussie indie, pop rock band “Custard”! They’ve been my favourite band growing up so to have even seen them play live let alone, built a connection with them, recorded on their new album & then sharing the stage with them has been a childhood dream come true! Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
1. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Putting Vegemite on EVERYTHING. (2nd to baked beans, Vegemite is the best food group.)
2. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Vegemite & Baked Beans.
