When I sat down with Rok from Within Destruction, I knew we were in for an engaging conversation about the band’s evolution, their latest releases, and their journey from humble beginnings in Slovenia to international recognition.

The Origin Story

The band’s roots trace back to a high school event in Slovenia where students were encouraged to form bands and perform. Rok, along with a few classmates, seized the opportunity and started playing cover songs. While the initial lineup fell apart, Rok’s dedication remained. Inspired by the band As I Lay Dying, he continued practicing with the original drummer, which eventually led to the formation of Within Destruction.

The Sound Evolution

Described as a fusion of deathcore, metalcore, and electronic music, Within Destruction’s sound has undergone a significant transformation over the years. Rok acknowledged that each album presents a different sonic experience, reflecting the band’s constant evolution. “It’s really hard to place us in one box,” Rok said. “Our sound spreads across several genres.”

Lineup Changes and Adaptation

The band’s lineup has shifted over time, moving from a five-piece to a four-piece, and at one point, a two-piece with a session guitarist. Now functioning as a trio, Rok reflected on how these changes have influenced their performances and adaptability on stage.

The New EP and Singles

Their latest single, Incomplete, is part of the upcoming album Animetal. The animated music video tells a story of grief and loss, but with a broader message about coping with personal struggles. Rok’s favorite track, Cyber Girl, stands out for its aesthetics and the enjoyable recording process.

Touring Australia

Within Destruction is set to embark on their Animetal tour in Australia this April. Having toured the country twice before, Rok expressed his fondness for Melbourne, citing its vibrant atmosphere and welcoming fans. The upcoming tour will feature new singles from Animetal as well as classics from their previous records.

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

Rok emphasized the importance of putting music out there and not getting bogged down by perfectionism. “Let people consume it and give you feedback. You’ll gain more from that than keeping it to yourself,” he advised. He also stressed the value of live performance in building a loyal fan base and attracting industry attention.

Personal Insights

When asked about his dream collaboration, Rok instantly mentioned Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. He also shared his love for gaming and anime, with Final Fantasy VII being his favorite game. His favorite album is Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, and his go-to comfort food is ramen.

Looking to the Future

Within Destruction’s goal is to create a unique and recognizable sound that stands out in the industry. “We want people to immediately know it’s us when they hear or see our work,” Rok explained.

About WITHIN DESTRUCTION

Within Destruction are an innovative metal group from Slovenia. They have been disrupting the deathcore and metalcore scenes since their formation in 2010. Known for their intense sound, the band uniquely incorporates electronic elements and anime samples into their music, adding layers of unpredictability that have captivated fans worldwide. They gained international recognition with their 2016 album ‘VOID,’ and their irreverent approach to metal, which has built a dedicated global following.

Their third album, ‘DEATHWISH,’ which was mixed and mastered by Will Putney, further solidified their reputation. Featuring fan- favourite tracks like “Human Defect” and the title track, leading to their first European headliner tour, as well as a breakthrough in the U.S. market. Continuing to push boundaries, the band released ‘LOTUS’ in 2022, leaning further into metalcore and embracing clean vocals, which sparked both outrage and admiration among listeners. Known for their ambitious live performances and relentless dedication, Within Destruction remains a force in modern metal, constantly evolving and challenging genre norms. With ‘ANIMETAL,’ they’re poised to deliver their boldest statement yet.
