JUNGAJI in the press

“Jungaji’s debut solo album ‘Betting On Blak’ shows what it’s like to have ignited the flames of survival, self-worth, and spirituality, forged through decades of lived experience. The record roars with soul, aches with blues, and carries the cultural gravity of a man who has survived two strokes, two heart attacks, and a lifetime of systemic weight—and still chooses to bet on himself.” – ILLUSTRATE MAGAZINE, USA

“There’s something rare and electrifying about an album that doesn’t just share music but pours out a life’s worth of wisdom, resilience, and raw emotional truth. Betting On Blak, the debut solo record from Jungaji, does exactly that—and then some. It’s a declaration of survival, cultural pride, and personal rebirth. If you’re looking for music with soul, heart, grit, and groove—music that means something—Betting On Blak is it. You won’t just hear Jungaji’s journey. You’ll feel it. And by the end, you might even start betting on yourself too.” – ODYSSEY MAGAZINE

The track is lifted from his debut solo album ‘Betting On Blak’ which was released last month, landing at No.1 on the AIR 100% Independent Albums chart, No.5 on the AIR Independent Labels Chart; and in the ARIA Charts at No.2 in the ARIA Australian Hip Hop/R&B Chart, No.6 in the ARIA Vinyl Chart, No.8 in the ARIA Australian Albums Chart, and No.19 in the ARIA International Hip Hop/R&B Chart.

Speaking about the song and the video, Jungaji said, “Ol’ Rooster is a celebration of my beautiful old dad we lost on May 1st last year. Shout out to producer Cody McWaters at Huntinground Studios who laid down this track, and also to video director Steph Vajda from Article One productions for the film clip.  The song title was born out of my dad John Patrick Brady’s love of the Roosters footy club. It’s a song about his sugar-cane-upbringing in Proserpine, highlighting the hard-living up there in the early 50s, and he made his way in a classic old Holden down to Magandjin/Brisbane. I also created a painting also titled Ol Rooster that you see in the video – it’s a colourful painting; when I think about my dad and when I think about Country, I think of virial luminous colours and that was dad’s life, from when he was born to the love that he gave 10 of us kids, til when he passed away last year. It’s hard not living with dad but I know he is spiritually aligned with me and he walks with me.”

The ‘Betting On Blak’ album contains singles that Jungaji has released over the past 18 months, along with unreleased tracks ‘Sun Moon Stars’, ‘Misson Streets’, and a dance-remix of previous single ‘Adore’ by Candy Suite with Bekki Whitton. Previously released singles include ‘River Girl’, ‘Wakka Wakka Woman’, ‘Pilbara Man’ and his QMA award-winning Gugu Yalanji language song ‘Gummy Bamarra’, which has clocked up over 250k streams on Spotify.

‘Betting On Blak’ has received critical acclaim around the world, including legendary ex-ABC/Triple J announcer Costa Zouliou who reviewed the album, saying “The bottom line is, it’s a great record, and I’m happy to put it on my turntable. Good music is good music in whatever genre it comes in. And this is just that – good music.”   Costa will launch his new podcast series soon – The Breakdown – featuring an in-depth interview with Jungaji.

Jungaji is a Western Gugu Yalanji & Birrigubba songman whose music journey spans more than 30 years, from the 90s R&B of his Inala vocal group Aim 4 More, to a profound cultural rebirth inspiring his solo career. Now named “Jungaji” (meaning rock, strength, and knowledge – pronounced Jun-gah-jee), he shares his contemporary cultural stories through his music, visual art, theatre and advocacy, inspiring resilience and empowerment.

Jungaji isn’t just an urban Aboriginal singer – he’s a transmitter of ancient knowledge through a contemporary lens, and the world is hungry for this kind of authentic voice.
