A new collaboration with violinist Susie Bishop, Indian Tablas player Maharshi Raval and double bassist artist Elsen Price come together as the ‘Mesos Trio’ to release their debut-self titled EP on the 19th of July 2025.

Recorded on the 15th of June 2025 at Point Blank Studio in Drummoyne, Sydney Australia, these 3 musicians met for the first time to record these tunes on the day.

Established in their own right, each of the musicians in the Mesos Trio have led individual careers for over 20 years, performing with some of the world’s leading Folk, Jazz, Classical, Indian classical and experimental musicians within that time. Maharshi and Elsen had performed a number of times as a duo with double bass and tablas, and were looking to record an album, though as the date got closer, it was decided to ask Susie to join.

The album is a real exploration of modern folk music, where seasoned professional musicians meet for the first time and explore new music in real time. Tracks in the album such as ‘Mountain Wind, Mountain Rock’ is a fully improvised piece which was set up by a groove played by Maharshi on Indian tablas, which was beautifully recorded in one take, with each musician trusting their ears and instinct above any attempts to try and ‘control’ what they played. ‘Ashokan Farewell’ was introduced by Susie, a stunning tune which is commonly played amongst folk musicians, which ended with an exploration of sounds.

Elsen’s bass playing under the general melody and chord direction was inspired by Irish tradition for guitar or bass to improvise harmony under the tune. The track ‘Whiskey Before Breakfast’ is a fun little tune that Elsen felt sat well enough on the bass to play the melody on it. It’s a very common folk tune that Elsen first heard at bush dances as a child in Bithramere in rural Australia, where his family was amongst other farming families who got together at Easter or Christmas to socialise, dance and listen to a bush band put together by local farmers.

“This album is about creating the scene of musicians coming together to make music, in a ‘modern folk’ style. It’s quite common in the folk tradition for amateur and community musicians to get together, show each other songs, and play for the enjoyment of community and connection.”

“The Mesos Trio have brought this into the context of three highly experienced professional musicians with 20+ year careers, sharing music, which is about the combined enjoyment of music, which does get captured on the recording. There were no overdubs, no excessive studio effects or no tampering at all with what was created, giving the listener the insight to the sound of the group as they are.”

The energy that the musicians created was genuine, and with the video of the sessions released on youtube, you can see in real time the interplay and connection the artists have with both the music and each other. The styles of music which were touched on were folk, jazz, classical, Indian classical and experimental music.

The Mesos Trio is looking forward to playing this music (and many more tunes) in the real world and building connections with audiences and other musicians alike when the world so desperately needs more human connection.

The album will be available on all streaming platforms, with live recordings to be released via YouTube.
