ARIA-nominated artist, songwriter and storyteller Mo’Ju will release their powerful new live album, Mo’Ju with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Double J Live at the Wireless), on Friday, September 26 via ABC Music. Recorded live at Melbourne’s iconic Hamer Hall in 2023, the set features reimagined arrangements of Mo’Ju’s most powerful works, including the landmark single ‘Native Tongue’ – a song that has become an enduring cultural touchstone.

Mojo comments, “After 20 odd years of touring, it starts becoming rare to have new experiences in that space, but I had never really done anything like this. Hearing your music arranged and performed by an orchestra is a very emotional thing. I don’t think I’d even dared to dream of something like it. It seemed unlikely for someone like me. So to not only have done this, but to have committed it to record… working with such incredibly talented people, I’m very proud of it but I’m also humbled by it.”

The collaboration, arranged by composer Jamie Messenger and brought to life under the baton of conductor Nicholas Buc, offers a breathtaking fusion of Mo’Ju’s visceral, genre-defying artistry with the lush, cinematic scope of a full symphony orchestra. The result is a performance that amplifies the emotional weight and urgency of Mo’Ju’s music, while unveiling new sonic dimensions to their acclaimed catalogue.

‘Native Tongue’, first released in 2018, remains one of Mo’Ju’s most defining works. A deeply personal exploration of identity, heritage and belonging, the track sparked important and sometimes difficult conversations across Australia, cementing Mo’Ju as one of the country’s most vital voices.

The 2023 Hamer Hall performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra marked another milestone in Mo’Ju’s career. Presenting orchestral reinterpretations of their works, from the searing honesty of ‘Native Tongue’ to selections from Oro, Plata, Mata, the concert demonstrated the depth, adaptability and emotional resonance of Mo’Ju’s songwriting.

For Mo’Ju, the project was more than music – it was a continuation of a lifelong commitment to truth-telling, cultural legacy and fearless self-expression.

Renowned for their commanding live presence, Mo’Ju has performed headline tours across Australia, multiple tours in Europe, and appeared at festivals in Aotearoa and the USA. They have collaborated on stage with the likes of Archie Roach, Uncle Jack Charles, Thelma Plum, A.B. Original, Paul Kelly and Fever Ray.

The last few years have looked like a relative hiatus from touring for Mo’Ju, who has spent much of their career on the road. Their fourth studio album, Oro, Plata, Mata, was released in 2023 to widespread acclaim.

The album’s launch was marked by two extraordinary performances at the Sydney Opera House and Hamer Hall where Mo’Ju’s full seven-piece band was joined by the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras. Around 70 musicians filled the stage each night, delivering completely reimagined versions of the songs.

Mo’Ju once again reinvents their live show, paring it back to its purest form – just piano and vocals – for a run of performances across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Ulverstone, Launceston, Hobart, and a special appearance at this year’s OzAsia Festival in Adelaide.

The set spans 13 years of artistry, four albums and two EPs, revisiting fan favourites like  ‘Change Has To Come’ and ‘Native Tongue’ in their rawest, most intimate form. Sharing the stage is pianist, friend and long-time collaborator Lewis Coleman, bringing a new level of warmth and vulnerability to the performances. An unmissable opportunity to experience the heart and soul of Mo’Ju’s artistry up close
