Today, GRAMMY nominated, ARIA award-winning Australian electronic pioneers Cut Copy release their seventh studio album Moments via Cutters Records / The Orchard. The album features a new single, “Belong To You” with American folk artist, Kate Bollinger.

Moments is a homecoming for the ages, a masterful series of sonic vignettes and moments in time. Inspired by the free-flowing, melting pot mindset behind early hip hop and electro, proto-house and punk disco, the band found direction away from the rulebook and in the unexpected marriages of styles and instruments to create something mutant, unassuming and utterly addictive. The resulting collection expertly traverses electronic to synth pop, crossing trip-hop and rock sensibilities between, spanning complex interludes and intricate sonic breakdowns all threaded together by a simple, collective desire to try and make sense of life’s ups and downs.

Dan Whitford, shares on the accompanying single “‘Belong To You’ was one of the first tracks I wrote for our new album. And even as an instrumental, it immediately felt like a pop song waiting to happen. The song is written about a guy who obsesses about past mistakes without realising that the love he’s searching for has been right in front of him all along.

The song has a wistful romantic quality to it so we thought it could be cool to do the song as a duet to emphasise that. And around the time we were working on this song, a friend introduced us to Kate Bollinger who is an amazing LA singer and songwriter. So we asked her to try a little vocal idea and that’s how the song took shape.

When I heard Kate’s voice in the track it sounded amazing. I could almost imagine it as some kind of sci-fi country love song, so to bring that energy to it, we asked “Evil” Graham Lee (from legendary Australian band The Triffids) to provide his signature pedal steel sound. And that was the final piece of the puzzle that gave the song its magical finishing touch. Cut Copy hasn’t worked with outside performers too many times in the past. But it was a real treat to work with two artists that come from such different places musically, but complimented each other perfectly on this song”.

Introducing the record is previous single “Solid”, where soothing ambience and soaring effervescence collide in danceable catharsis, lending a sonic nudge to keep going, even when life throws a few curveballs. New single “Belong To You” (with Kate Bollinger) kicks things up a gear, with smacks of percussion and funk-laiden synth streaks that erupt into a dizzying sonic dream, where Whitford’s falsettos seamlessly bleed into Bollinger’s angelic folk vocals carrying a comforting epiphany, “all that you want is already here”. “Still See Love” delves further into the unsuspecting duality felt across the record, lyrically and sonically reflecting two sides in a relationship morphed into one cohesive, hybrid disco-dub inspired dance track. “When This Is Over” contrasts electronic and ‘real life’ sounds – including a children’s choir – before expelling into an out of body instrumental outro, while “Children of Fairlight” sees a meeting of grungier grooves and expansive choruses.

Title track “Moments” sees a cacophony of synths flicker amongst a trip-hop soundscape, soon transformed by a guitar-driven switch-up that will be fodder for any heady dancefloor. Intergalactic sonics and thumping club breakdowns infiltrate “Gravity” in a moment of sheer euphoria, closely followed by the slow builds of electro offering “More Alive”, capturing the colour of life when the right person comes along. “Find A Place Among The Stars” dissolves the album in a soothing outro framed by light keys, spine-tingling layering, and finding comfort in the expanse of our world.

Celebrating the album, the full live band will kick things off at Barwon Heads Hotel on Wednesday 10 September before they perform a special sold-out hometown show at Forum Melbourne on Thursday 11 September. Following on with rare appearances at Night At The Barracks at Manly’s North Head in Sydney on Friday 12 September and at Brisbane’s Night At The Parkland on Saturday 13 September. They’ll also head to Wanderer Festival, Pambula on Sunday 5 October for a DJ Set, before embarking on a US tour in November. Ticket info can be found below for each Australian show.

Tune into the warm glow of Moments now, a record dedicated to connecting one another through dancefloor spirit and the universal emotions of life’s rollercoaster. Whitford concludes; “Euphoria bubbles away under the surface in most of the songs and I think that’s the Cut Copy DNA shining through.”
