I recently sat down with the wonderfully vibrant Harper Bloom, an artist who describes herself as “still blooming” – and it couldn’t be a more perfect way to sum up her journey so far. With a unique blend of indie synth-pop and party pop, Harper has been steadily carving her space in the Australian music scene, armed with heartfelt songwriting, a love of performance, and a quirky cinematic live show that is anything but ordinary.
From Songwriter to Performer
Harper’s story began with a passion for songwriting long before she stepped into the spotlight as an artist. It wasn’t until a trip to New York in her early twenties that she realised a career in music could truly be possible. Inspired by the creative energy around her, she returned to Melbourne to give it a shot – and it’s paid off.
Her early work, including Walk My Way (produced by Ben McCarthy), landed high rotation on Triple J and set the tone for her career. Since then, she’s played festivals such as Gaytimes, Beyond the Valley, Bigsound, and even travelled to London to collaborate with international producers.

Cinematic Shows and Party Pop Vibes
When you hear Harper Bloom’s name, you’ll often also hear the phrase cinematic live show. But what does that mean? For Harper, it means an experience that goes beyond the music. Expect juggling, drag queens, circus-inspired themes, quirky visuals, and plenty of audience participation.
“I want people to feel part of the show,” Harper explained. “It’s all about connection – getting everyone involved and making it memorable.”
Musically, she describes her sound as indie synth-pop party pop – an evolution influenced by artists like Vance Joy, BENEE, and now the larger-than-life Chappell Roan, who Harper cites as a current favourite.
New Single and Upcoming EP
Harper’s latest single, Girl Like You, is inspired by the allure (and danger) of being drawn to someone magnetic but unpredictable. It’s a bold, playful track that captures both vulnerability and fire.
The single is part of her upcoming EP, House of Cards, due late October. The EP draws heavily on personal experiences, including a difficult period of caregiving where Harper found herself under immense pressure, both emotionally and financially. From those challenges came songs that are raw, powerful, and full of honesty.
One standout track for Harper is The Cobra, which she describes as her personal favourite. The EP’s title, House of Cards, reflects the fragility of carefully constructed lives – how easily they can crumble, and the growth that can come from rebuilding.

Looking Ahead
While a full album is on Harper’s wish list, the reality of funding means she’ll continue releasing EPs for now. But with a Melbourne headline show planned (possibly at The Espy Basement in November) and a yet-to-be-announced festival slot in January, Harper’s live calendar is filling up.
Long term, her dream collaboration would be with Chappell Roan, though she admits that rocking the stage with Freddie Mercury at Live Aid wouldn’t have been too bad either!
The Person Behind the Music
Beyond her music, Harper is deeply philosophical, with a love of Socrates, Plato, and the wisdom of staying present in each moment. She’s also got a playful side – she once swam across Perth’s Swan River at midnight, naked, with bull sharks in the water (after a few drinks, of course!).
When asked what she loves most about performing, Harper’s answer was simple: “Seeing people’s reactions and getting them involved. Watching them sing back my songs – that’s the best feeling.”
And perhaps one of the most heartwarming moments of our chat was when Harper gave a shout-out to her partner Charlotte, acknowledging the support and grounding she brings.
Final Bloom
With her energy, honesty, and a sound that blends quirk with sincerity, Harper Bloom is an artist to watch. She’s not just making music – she’s creating experiences, weaving philosophy, fun, and fearless creativity into everything she does.
As she continues to bloom, one thing is clear: Harper’s journey is only just beginning.
