ART vs SCIENCE
return with infectious
ode to the snow
‘POWDER’
alongside cutting-edge
AI generated music videoKnown for their dancefloor filling, feel-good songs, Art vs Science are back with another infectious anthem, ‘Powder’, a somewhat-silly ode to the snow which has nods to Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and… *checks notes*… yodelling.
On the creation of ‘Powder’, Art vs Science’s Dan Mac says “I love this video and song. The song came first – and it was silly from the get go. There was Kraftwerk and Daft Punk in its DNA, who are two of the major deities in the Art vs Science pantheon. In writing the lyrics I thought about the times I’d been skiing with my bandmates, Dan and Jim, and how fun it was. There were so many moments where I would stop and listen to what the song wanted to be, and when I recorded it, it would make me laugh. So, this song is a pile of my laughs stacked on top of each other.”

Fittingly for such an upbeat and fun-loving song, ‘Powder’ is accompanied by an equally rambunctious music video, created by Dan Mac and Alex Roberts, who directed the band’s iconic videos for ‘Parlez Vous Francais?‘ and ‘Magic Fountain‘, both of which have racked up millions of views. Using a mix of cutting-edge AI and traditional editing processes, the music video for ‘Powder’ is a wonderful example of how artists can use AI to create something truly extraordinary that they ordinarily wouldn’t have the resources for.
On using AI, Dan Mac explains “I played Alex Roberts the new Art vs Science song, and the ideas started flying about. He’s been dabbling in AI video making and texted me few videos ideas. Straight away we were like, “Ooh it’s a Yeti singing”, and then “He’s in the cave because he got chased away by the villagers”… and this little backstory started to emerge. It was a joy to make. We would listen to the music, and imagine funny scenes, then type it into the computer and bring them to life. There are definitely some problematic aspects to AI, but as Alex says, we’re making art with this, and to actually make a production like this video would have cost a million bucks, and burnt tons of CO2, and would never have happened on our budget. You’d have to transport an enormous crew and extras and lighting up to a ski village. Instead we captured lots of laughs between friends with this video and told a weird story, so it’s good.”
Named after their respective university degrees, Art vs Science was formed in Sydney in 2008 by three friends from high school, Dan Williams, Dan Mac and Jim Finn. Before they had even written any songs, they were offered a gig by a mate and subsequently wrote seven songs in 48 hours.
Very soon after, they won a triple j Unearthed competition which saw them play one of their first shows at Splendour In The Grass. Right from their inception, their music was tailor made for big festival stages and they went on to play almost every major festival in the country over the next decade, including these energetic live performances at Falls Festival (2009), Splendour In The Grass (2014) and triple j’s One Night Stand (2011), as well as touring America, UK and Japan.
Widely known as one of the best live acts in Australia, Art vs Science proudly play 100% live, and as a result, their quirky, theatrical, electronic pop sets quickly caught the eye of Datarock and The Chemical Brothers, who invited the band to support them on their Australian tours.
Art vs Science have released three albums, The Experiment (2011), Off the Edge of the Earth and into Forever, Forever (2015) and Big Overdrive (2022), the former of which won an ARIA Award for Best Independent Release. They’ve also recorded a triple j Like a Version cover of Daft Punk’s ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’ and fans have consistently voted them into triple j’s Hottest 100 countdowns for their anthemic songs ‘Parlez Vous Francais?’ (#2 in 2009) and ‘Magic Fountain’ (#9 in 2010) and ‘Flippers’ (#44 in 2008).
More recently, Art vs Science were voted #22 in triple j Unearthed’s 100 Best Discoveries, compiled using listener votes from the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, proving the enduring love for the band.
Now, having just released one of the catchiest songs of the year in ‘Powder’, Art vs Science prepare to release a string of new singles and a return to the stage next year.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
