When it comes to young Australian talent making waves in the country-pop scene, Ella Powell’s name is fast becoming impossible to ignore. At just 21 years old, she’s already got a string of awards, festival appearances, and releases under her belt — and with her new single Passerby out now, it’s clear she’s only just getting started.

From an early age, Ella knew music was her path. “When I started to talk really, I was always singing around the house,” she laughs. “My parents said I sounded like a dying cat, so they got me singing lessons. Then it all just kind of went from there.” Beginning with musical theatre, she built confidence before moving into songwriting and performing her own material — a passion that’s taken her from local shows to the big stages of Tamworth.

Her rise started young. At 14, she won the People’s Choice Award in Tamworth, and just two years later she was crowned the CCMA National Junior Songwriter of the Year for her debut single Paper Town. Since then, she’s released multiple singles (Along the Way, Behind the Glass), toured extensively, and earned a spot as a Toyota Star Maker Top 10 finalist in 2024 — all before turning 22.

Over the past year, Ella has been refining her sound with producer and co-writer Ben Horsley, blending influences outside traditional country. “I’d describe it as country-pop for the overthinkers,” she explains. “This new song even has a saxophone solo. I wanted to create something not so polished — something that feels real and true to me.”

That honesty runs deep in her music. Passerby was born out of frustration and uncertainty. “I felt like life was just passing me by. I’d outgrown what I was doing musically. Writing this song really helped me find myself again.” With contributions from musicians in Nashville and the UK, Passerby is a bold step forward — and a taste of the bigger body of work she’s building towards.

Despite her youth, Ella already has a clear perspective on authenticity in music. “I think before I focused too much on commercialisation,” she reflects. “Now I know you just have to be true to yourself. There are so many sacrifices in this industry — if you don’t love what you’re doing, it’s not worth it.”

Her influences range from Australian country legends like Adam Harvey and Kasey Chambers, who supported her early career, to international icons like Lana Del Rey, who Ella names as her dream collaborator. She also draws on childhood influences such as Eva Cassidy and The Beatles, thanks to her English roots.

As for the future, Ella has her sights set high: more singles, an eventual album, plenty of shows, and yes — the U.S. “Nashville is definitely in the pipeline,” she says. “I want to take my music globally and connect with as many people as possible.”

But even as she dreams big, Ella keeps it grounded. She’s passionate about women’s rights, values being truthful in her life and lyrics, and still has fun stories to tell — like the time she accidentally set her Doc Martens on fire while leaning too close to a flame. Her favourite things? Chocolate, Noosa, The Beer Shed in Campbelltown, and a good cup of English tea. She even has a tattoo that reads Be Brave — words of encouragement from her nan that have become her personal motto.

At just 21, Ella Powell’s story is only beginning, but she’s already proven herself as one of the most exciting voices in Australian country-pop. With her talent, work ethic, and authenticity, she’s set to light up stages both here and abroad.

You can stream Passerby now on all platforms and keep up with Ella’s journey via her socials — and something tells us you’ll be hearing her name a lot more in years to come.
