Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be a musician?
I’ve always loved singing ever since I was a little kid, but I never really thought I could make a career out of it. It wasn’t until after school, when I started considering studying music, that I realised it was actually something I could pursue seriously. When did you get the song writing bug?
I think I really got the songwriting bug during COVID. I had just started teaching myself guitar, and writing songs became this little safe space for me. Once I realised how much I loved putting my feelings into music, I realised how much I wanted to keep doing it beyond just my bedroom. How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe my sound as honest, nostalgic, and hopeful, but with a bit of cheekiness too. It’s mostly indie pop with some singer-songwriter influence, and I love making songs that feel like little diary entries, something you can cry to, but also something you can scream in the car with your best friends. Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think people resonate with my music because it’s really honest and personal. A lot of my songs are about the different experiences and relationships you go through in your teen years, and how confusing all those emotions can be. Even though they come from my own experiences, I think people connect because they’ve felt the same way too.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I think one of the most inspiring artists for me is Taylor Swift. Her music, performances, and work ethic motivate me in so many ways. Her discography is full of incredible songwriting, and I love how she’s always pushing herself to get better. The way she dedicates herself to her craft and her career is so admirable, and whenever I’m feeling unmotivated, I always put on her songs, they never fail to inspire me.Your new single ‘Its You’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I first started writing this song in a session with Anna Laverty. I really wanted to write a vengeful yet cathartic song so we brainstormed heaps of lyric ideas and that’s when we started discussing the common saying “it’s not you, it’s me”, and thought it would be fun to reword it to “it’s not me, it’s you”. I then brought this song to my producer Michael Belsar and my drummer Ben Ellingworth and started the recording process, and we all had so much fun experimenting with different sounds and shaping the song.Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yes! My debut EP “it’s a feeling that i know” comes out on October 10th, and I could not be more excited to finally share these songs that I have been working on for just over 2 years.Any tours or events coming up soon?
Yes! I just announced my first little tour to celebrate my debut EP. I’ll be playing headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney at the end of October. I’ve never played a headline show in Sydney before so I am SO excited. I seriously cannot wait to sing and dance with everyone there! What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I am really looking forward to playing all the songs on the EP, including some other unreleased tracks. Fans can expect a fun, high-energy show where we dance our hearts out, mixed with intimate acoustic moments for some of my slower songs.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I think it would have to be Lizzy McAlpine. She’s one of my all time favourite artists, and getting the chance to perform with her would honestly be such a dream come true. She inspires me so much both vocally and sonically. The harmonies in her songs are so beautiful, and singing in harmony with her would be the ultimate full circle moment for me.What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I think my long term aspirations as an artist are to keep growing, both in my craft and in the way I connect with audiences. As a songwriter and musician, I’m always striving to get better, so continuing to practice and work on my songwriting every day is a priority for me. More than anything, I just want to keep pushing myself to do my best and create music that feels meaningful and true to myself. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
I’d tell an artist starting out to stay consistent, keep working on their craft, and not be afraid to put themselves out there. There’s always more to learn and ways to grow musically, so focusing on that is really important. And even if it feels scary at first, sharing your music can open so many doors, you never know what opportunities might be waiting just around the corner. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
Performing live is one of my favourite parts of making music. There’s something so special about feeling the energy in a room, connecting with people in real life, and sharing that moment together. What’s been the career highlight so far?
I think my biggest career highlight so far was selling out my first ever headline show at the Bergy Bandroom. It was the single launch for my debut single “The Secret”, and hearing the crowd sing the lyrics back to me was so special. Another huge highlight was getting the chance to open for Lexi Jayde in 2023, those shows were so much fun and really kickstarted everything for me.Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
