Opening with spacey guitar licks and syncopated percussive elements, “WhatsInIt4Me” quickly sets the pace as smooth and sultry tones meld with Skylar’s tender vocals and seductive storytelling. “Reciprocity all up and in and out these sheets,” she pleads, while recontextualising the 2002 smash hit from Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey.

As the sun-kissed instrumentation fades, Skylar steps behind the drums for a surging solo, bursting with potent, characterful touches that perfectly capture her raw, expressive musicality before ushering in “Do U Ever”. Blossoming with melodic intimacy, the R&B-pop heater emerges through shimmering harmonies and velvet-smooth production, laying groundwork for the young talent to explore complex love and the magnetic push and pull of temptation, where desire and doubt intertwine in a thrall of irresistible tension.

One of the most exciting new talents breaking into wider consciousness, Skylar continues to display authenticity and vulnerability while reflecting on love, empowerment, and the experiences of a young woman forging her own path. Properly introducing her sleek, stylish sound waves in 2021, the rising artist delivered a stream of addictive releases, including her breakout single “YOU” (watch), the potent slow-jam “What’s Good” (watch) ft. US vocalist Tone Stith, and her EP ‘SHIVER’ (listen) last year. Boasting weighty collaboration credits from East London powerhouse Scribz Riley (21 Savage, J Hus, Stormzy) to OSCAR-winning musician D’Mile (Rihanna, H.E.R., Silk Sonic), Skylar would later flip the script and uncover a more authentic, true-to-self approach that enabled freedom from the major-label conveyor belt.

Now fully independent, Skylar continues her electric upward trajectory this year, earning well over 2M views across her viral drum covers (“Ex-Factor” by Ms. Lauryn Hill // “Love Me Not” by Ravyn Lenae) as well as immersive, contemporary single releases like “UberEX” (listen) ft. the highly acclaimed rapper Tkay Maidza and her recent cut “Pedestal”. Amassing critical attention across WONDERLANDCOLORS, and more, the rising star cut her teeth alongside iconic collaborators and musicians, including GRAMMY-winning producer Noel Zancanella (Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Alicia Keys) and multi-platinum songwriter Nate Campany (Dua Lipa, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter), who helped shape the foundations for the striking ballad.

Skylar adds on her journey as a drummer: “I started playing when I was around 15 years old, and it actually began as a ‘dare’ from my mom. I was already playing piano and guitar, but I wanted to try something new. She kind of joked that the drums might be too hard to learn, and honestly, that was all the motivation I needed. I took it as a challenge. I started learning with my drummer, Arty, and told him I wanted to play them live at an upcoming show. He taught me an intro to play, and from then on it became my new obsession. I also really hope to see more women getting behind the kit. It’s often seen as a male-dominated instrument, but I think that’s changing and I can’t wait to continue bringing drums to the forefront of my artistry.”
