There are some artists you meet who seem to carry a whole cinematic universe within them. Brazil’s Violet Orlandi is one of those rare few. Known to millions online for her dark, atmospheric covers and now for her stunning original album Birdeater, Violet blends cinematic soundscapes, gothic elegance, and fierce independence in a way that’s entirely her own.

When I caught up with her from her home base in São Paulo, Violet was warm, thoughtful, and utterly focused. The YouTube star, songwriter, and now venue owner spoke with me about her roots, her inspirations, and the road that’s brought her to this moment.

Finding her voice

Growing up in a musical household, Violet was surrounded by sound from an early age.
“My mom was the head of a music school in São Paulo and my dad was a drummer,” she explained. “Music was always around me. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, but maybe it was destiny.”

Even so, Violet didn’t initially see herself as a musician. “At one point, I wanted to be a marine biologist and study great white sharks,” she laughed. “I was obsessed. You should see my Jaws poster—it’s the first thing you see when you walk into my house.”

From YouTube to Birdeater

Violet’s artistic journey began online. “I started uploading to YouTube when I was 16, but I only took it seriously around 18,” she said. “It was never about going viral—it was a steady climb. I made a promise to myself to post a new video every week, no matter what.”

That discipline paid off. Over the years, Violet built a loyal following who admired her haunting renditions of rock and metal classics, delivered with an ethereal intensity all her own. But after years of non-stop content creation, something felt missing.

“At one point, I realized I was making what I call fast-food music,” she admitted. “It was polished and fast, but it wasn’t feeding my soul.”

That hunger for something deeper became the spark for Birdeater, her debut original album — a cinematic, immersive project created in collaboration with her husband.

“We decided to record locally and focus on performance, not production tricks,” she said. “No auto-tune, no comping—just getting a real, emotional take. It took four years, but it’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.”

The cinematic sound

Violet describes her music as atmospheric and cinematic, a blend that draws directly from her love of film.

“I write best when I have a movie playing in the background,” she said. “The emotions of film feed my songwriting. We love to add sound effects, voices, and little details. I even brought in voice actors for the album.”

Her influences are as eclectic as her sound—Marilyn Manson, London Grammar, Crosses, and Deftones feature prominently.

“Manson is my number one. I’m a huge fan—he’s the only artist I really fangirl over,” she said. “I even sent him a music video we made for Man That You Fear, and he replied saying, ‘It’s beautiful. Thank you so much.’ That was the happiest day of my life.”

A life in São Paulo

Despite her global audience, Violet’s roots remain firmly in Brazil. Alongside her husband, she now runs a music venue called The Raven in São Paulo.

“It’s been a wild ride, but so much fun,” she said. “We play there three times a week with our band, and I do live streams every Monday and Wednesday. Once a month, I take my stream to the bar—it’s half meet-and-greet, half online show.”

Though she’d love to tour Birdeater, she’s content with her current setup.

“We’re completely independent—no manager, no label, just us. Touring would be amazing, but right now, we’re happy connecting directly with our fans. Maybe one day, when the time’s right.”

Advice for new artists

Having built her career from the ground up, Violet has plenty of wisdom for those hoping to follow.

“You’ve got to be ready for a ride,” she said. “Learn as many skills as you can—film yourself, record yourself, edit your videos. The more independent you are, the easier your path will be. Even labels now look for artists who already have everything figured out.”

She also emphasises the power of collaboration. “Working with my husband changed everything for me,” she said. “Find someone who understands your vision—it’ll take your art to another level.”

And, of course, she stresses one universal truth: “There’s no escaping the hard work. You have to put your head down and do it.”

Looking ahead

For Violet, the goal now is simple — to have her original music recognized on its own merits.

“I’ve had a long career doing covers, and I’ll always love that,” she said. “But I want people to hear Birdeater and know this is me. This is who I am.”

And for fans wondering if she’ll ever get to share a stage with Marilyn Manson?

“If it ever happens,” she laughed, “I think that would blow everyone’s minds — mine included.”
