Cara — Loss, Stillness, Survival, and the Making of The Kronicles
Some artists arrive with a clean-cut tagline. Cara is not one of them — and thank goodness for that.
She’s an artist built from chapters rather than slogans, from survival rather than strategy, and from stories that refuse to stay quiet.Cara (one word, not two) sat down with me for a raw, grounded and unexpectedly philosophical conversation. From her childhood in South Texas, to the chaos and freedom of Los Angeles, to the grief that reshaped her life, to her upcoming debut concept album The Kronicles, nothing about her journey has been linear — but every step has mattered.
“I think I’ve always been an artist.”
Even as a kid, Cara was writing stories, putting on shows, and absorbing the loud music constantly booming through her house thanks to her dad’s speaker-repair business for local bands. Creativity wasn’t a hobby — it was an environment.
But Texas was only the beginning.
Right after high school graduation, she did something many dream of but few attempt: she flew to Los Angeles with “a bike-wash suitcase, barely any money, and no plan.”
LA wasn’t easy — especially without a car — so she used the last of her cash to get to New York City, where she lived for years before eventually returning to LA.“Those primal beginnings… they’re hard, but they’re rewarding,” she says. “They helped me become who I am.”
Loss, Grief & the Birth of Stillness
Cara’s upcoming album is shaped around profound loss — her mother, her brother, and her mentor Gangsta Boo — all within a painfully short time.
“I didn’t know where to turn after I lost my mom and brother,” she tells me.
“Writing the album was my survival. I don’t know where I’d be without it — or my dogs.”Grief forced her into a new relationship with stillness.
She talks openly about practicing Zen, meditation, and staying grounded when life tries to overwhelm.“I try to live in observance,” she says. “Things happen, but you stay centered. Stillness is king.”
Gangsta Boo — Mentor, Friend, Muse
Gangsta Boo wasn’t just an artist Cara admired growing up — she became a real-life mentor.
“When you’re a kid and you love an artist, you never think you’ll meet them — let alone be friends. She believed in me immediately.”
Losing her was devastating, not only personally but creatively. They had plans to perform together. One of The Kronicles’ feature tracks, “Cara Kush”, includes Gangsta Boo’s recorded vocals — now a posthumous gift.
“If I could perform with anyone, alive or gone, it would be her,” Cara says without hesitation.
Walking the Runway & Finding New Confidence
At the recent Lumiere Fashion Show, Cara performed “Tears” — her first time on stage since her family losses — and also walked the runway for the first time.
“I’m not tall enough to be a runway model, but I loved it,” she laughs.
“Performing after two years… it was emotional, but nothing went wrong. It was the perfect way to rip the bandaid off.”The Music: Between Pop, Emotion & Total Freedom
Though her music sits in the “pop” category, Cara emphasizes that her sound is genre-fluid.
“Pop lets me blend everything. If a moment needs 808s, great. If it needs piano, great. I tell the story first — the genre follows.”
Her debut crafted album The Kronicles is autobiographical — a story told in chapters.
Among the releases so far:
• “Boulevard”
An ode to Los Angeles — a city she describes as the most non-judgmental place she’s ever lived.
“In LA, you’re allowed to be who you are. That freedom made me who I am.”• “Tears”
Written on a dark, rainy day after devastating losses.
“This song kept me alive,” she says plainly.
She performed it at Lumiere to huge applause.• “Yeah, What’s Up” (upcoming)
A fun, energetic chapter from her nightlife era.• “Cara Kush” (feat. Gangsta Boo) (upcoming)
A tribute to her years working in cannabis production in Boyle Heights — and to the community that embraced her.Marijuana, Advocacy & a TV Show in the Works
Beyond music, Cara spent nearly a decade working in hydroponic cannabis production — a subject she speaks about with surprising scientific precision and philosophical passion.
“Clean cannabis saved lives,” she says. “The stigma comes from misunderstanding. We have cannabinoid receptors in our bodies — sometimes they’re low, and cannabis brings us back into balance.”
Her family’s long history in the hemp industry may soon become the subject of a television series currently in development. While details are still private, Cara will play herself.
“It’s wild — I never wanted to be an actress, but I’m a writer. This is my story, so it feels natural.”
A Future Built on Creation
So what does Cara want long-term?
Expression. Expansion. Honesty. Her fans may follow her through music, fashion, cannabis advocacy, acting, or storytelling — but at the core, it all comes back to the chapters of The Kronicles.
“It all stems from the music,” she says. “The album holds the story. Everything else branches out from there.”

Cara’s finishing touches on The Kronicles will take her into next year, with a late summer / early autumn release window currently in view. Performances will start rolling out before that, with a tour planned once the album drops.
“I’m ready to get back on stage,” she says. “I prayed to my mom and brother before Lumiere, and everything went right. Now it’s time.”
