Interview with
VERTICOLI (5th December 2025)
Interview by Dave Bruce

How did the band come together over ten years ago down in Tassie? Where did it all begin?
Sam and James Hunn, two loving brothers, started the band with Will Colvin, a young lad known to hit the drums HARD. The name was taken from a prior musical project that fizzled out with another mate… and also from that Will Ferrel movie Blades of Glory. Briefly describe your journey to date.
We cut our teeth playing endless gigs in a super tight-knit Tasmania music community. 3 albums, 2 EPs, a smattering of singles. A lot of ambition, even more passion, lucky at times but unlucky living in VIC during lockdown. That’s when we were meant to make it! Our latest album is a bit of a reflection on the journey. How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
Bombastic and cathartic. It’s music made to be played very loud and resonate through your whole body. I think fans like our heaviness and grooves. Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Amazing live bands are always inspiring. Pearl Jam at Pinkpop 92, Red Hot Chili Peppers at Slane Castle 2003, Oasis live at Knebworth… those huge concerts with amazing energy and stage presence! Your latest album ‘Silverlinings’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
The album on the whole is about taking the lows and trying to find a high point in the midst of that. The title was inspired by me (Sam) working interstate away from my wife and daughter, thinking how do I want to spend this time… so my idle hands got to work writing an album, making the most of that situation. I’ve got a lot of music left in me, but was particularly keen to get another album out there after we cooled off from The Echo.
What are the signature tracks on the album, and which are your favorites to play live?
A Kick in the Teeth is great to play live, and starts off the album. See You Around is a different flavour to the rest of the album, a bit of a Tom Petty/Kurt Vile flavour, and then Sleep is totally different from the rest, verging on lo-fi dream pop. None of these are necessarily signature tracks as much as tracks that show the breadth of the album. We released Milk & Honey and Home as singles so you’d probably have to call those signature tracks! You have launch shows in Hobart (December 5) and Melbourne (January 9) Melbourne coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Fans can expect big energy and windmilling even if we’re only playing to a small group if mates, excellent supports, heaps of merch, and a willingness to sign even the most mundane of objects! What other tours and events are on the drawing board?
Depends if we blow up… world tour if so. But we’re not on a label, so we’ve gotta get back to the grind long enough to pay for the next album haha! If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Sam – I’d like to jam with Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and John Bonham. There’s no way that wouldn’t make for good music.
Will – Prince! I feel like he would kick my arse, but I’d love it. What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
We just wanna play some afternoon festival spots and go nuts! We don’t want much more than that! We’re slowly progressing towards them… we hope. We just love making and playing music. As long as we’re doing that, and there are a few people that dig it, I’ll be stoked. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
The catharsis. Playing at Falls and Party in the Paddock were both great opportunities and we did our best, but they were both before noon. 2-3 come at us! Now for some quick fire questions to get a little personal:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Rolled a ute being an idiot. Drive responsibly.
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Pearl Jam, particularly live shows/footage.
What is the thing you like most about yourself? Sam: I have big hands. Will: I started Pilates this year and have kept it up. Engage that core. Finally, let’s find out what your current (or all time) favorites are –
Album – Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Artist – Pearl Jam
Movie – Reign Over Me
Place to visit – California
Venue to play – Slane Castle
Food – Bolognese
Drink – Aperol Spritz
Person in History – Jimi Hendrix
Tattoo – (If you don’t have one, what would you get?) Jimi Hendrix .
